On Monday, a Delta Air Lines jet flipped onto its roof while attempting to land at Toronto Pearson International Airport, but fortunately, all 80 people on board survived, and the injuries sustained were relatively minor. The incident occurred when the Mitsubishi CRJ-900LR flight, originating from Minneapolis, attempted to land under treacherous weather conditions.
Around 2:15 p.m., the flight carrying 76 passengers and 4 crew members struggled to land on the runway as strong winds, gusting up to 65 km/h (40 mph), and blowing snow from a snowstorm made conditions hazardous. Communications between the pilot and the control tower were normal during the approach, and the exact cause of the crash remains unclear. After touchdown, the plane skidded off the runway and flipped upside down, while firefighters quickly responded to extinguish the fire.
Peter Carlson, a passenger traveling to Toronto for a paramedics conference, described the landing as “very forceful.” He told CBC News, “Suddenly everything just went sideways, and next thing I know, it was kind of a blink, and I’m upside down, still strapped in.”
Investigators believe that severe winter weather, including heavy snow and strong winds, could have contributed to the crash. While small fires ignited on the aircraft, emergency responders swiftly contained the flames, and passengers were seen walking across the tarmac to safety in videos shared on social media.
Canadian authorities held two brief press conferences, but did not release further details regarding the crash. The investigation into the incident continues, although experts suspect that weather-related factors such as icy conditions and high winds may have played a role.
The cause behind the aircraft flipping over on landing remains under investigation. Experts believe that the aircraft, in poor weather conditions, may have been unable to maintain its balance upon landing, causing it to skid and overturn. Though the plane was upside down, the fuselage remained largely intact, and firefighters were able to extinguish the flames quickly.
This accident highlights the risks associated with severe weather conditions during flights. Fortunately, all passengers and crew members survived, thanks to quick responses from emergency teams and the safety features of the aircraft. Investigations will continue to determine if any mechanical failures were involved in the incident.
