The Green Cabinet on Tumblr  .

06 May 1938, Manhattan, New York City, New York State, USA — Original caption: Sight of Face will be the Strip Tease of 1950. New York: At least so says Charles Weidman of the Modern Dance Company. In its newest presentation, This Passion, Weidman’s dancers attempt to show how the civilian of that year will be so military-minded, gas masks and similar accouterments will be as common for wearing apparel as dresses, hats, and pants are today. He envisions the strip tease of 1960 as being a dance wherein the only article of clothing removed by the dancer is the gas mask. Here Katherine Manning, the «Strip Tease Queen», removes her mask to the accompaniment of male gasps and feminine squeals. The «audience» is comprised of Charles Weidman, Limon, Harriette Ann Gray, and Beatrice Seckler. — Image by © Bettmann/CORBIS

20 Apr 1951 — Original caption: Roy Heckler is the literally flea-bitten proprietor of the establishment – he feeds the tiny actors by the simple method of putting them on his arm and letting them help themselves. His father started the flea circus in 1900, and Roy took over in 1925. He used to import the fleas from Italy, but when the war cut off his supply, he started raising his own. He trains only female fleas since they are twice the size as males, but likes to give them names Napoleon, Benny or Rudolph. He trains them not to jump, but to crawl or walk by placing them in a long, horizontal glass tube. They bump their heads every time they jump, and soon they get out of the habit. — Image by © Bettmann/CORBIS
