Introducing the fiddle instrument

The fiddle is one of the string-bowed instruments. It is one of the national instruments of Iranian music and due to the wide range of sound (more than four octaves) as well as the delicacy of sound, it is very common in the Middle East and the Far East and has a long history. In his book on the history of Iranian music, Ruhollah Khaleghi considers the fiddle to be an evolution of the rabab.

History of the fiddle

Some music scholars believe that all string instruments played with the bow are made from an Indian instrument called the Ravana Stron. In his book Musicians and Musicians, Professor Alberlaviniak also mentions the oldest bowed instrument, Ravana Stern, which was invented during the reign of Ravana, king of Ceylon, who lived around 5,000 BC.

In Iran, the first historical signs about the fiddle have been seen in the book of Al-Kabir Music by Abu Nasr al-Farabi in the fourth century AH. In this book, he mentions the fiddle with its Arabic name, Rabab. The fiddle was one of the main instruments of Iranian music during the Safavid and Qajar eras. The first recorded fiddle sound dates back to the early twentieth century.

The fiddle instrument was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in December 2017 by the Cultural Heritage Organization.

A silk cloth from the Timurid period is depicted on which a banquet house is depicted and a lady is playing the fiddle. This instrument was very common in the Safavid era, as it is depicted in one of the paintings of Hasht Behesht mansion in Isfahan and a lady is playing it.During the Qajar period, it was considered as one of the main instruments. The many paintings that have survived from that period are proof of this. The fiddle is for the Lors and Kurds of Iran and its back is open to the Lors. Some say that the violin was inspired by the fiddle. This instrument has enchanted with its pleasant sound and has delighted everyone. Hear from an Iranian: Many associate Iran with the Arabs, but the Arabs have nothing to do with Iran, neither language, nor speech, nor customs, nor instrument. The fiddle is only for Iran and is the original instrument of Iran. The Turks also have their own fiddle, but not this fiddle.

Some say that the main instrument of Iran is not only for the Qajar period, but now it is the main instrument of Iran. From very good Iranian fiddle players such as: Kayhan Kalhor, Ali Akbar Shekarchi, Ardeshir Kamkar, Sohrabpour Nazeri and ...This instrument is one of the hard instruments of Iran. The fiddle is played in two ways. A percussion like a guitar and a stretch like a violin
