Cleaning Your Gas Fireplace

Cleaning your gas fireplace on a routine basis can help it operate more efficiently and avoid expensive malfunctions. It may even help it run longer.

  1. Verify your fireplace is fully cooled.
  2. Turn the gas off by turning the valve to “off.”
  3. Remove the gas logs, examine them for cracks and clean them with a soft-bristled brush.
  4. Remove the lava rocks, vacuum them one at a time and get rid of soot with the brush.
  5. Clean the internal parts of the fireplace with a vacuum hose attachment.
  6. Clean interior edges with a moist cloth. Use warm, soapy water to clean up dust or soot buildups.
  7. Put back lava rocks and logs in the same order.
  8. Clean the glass housing with special fireplace glass cleaner and let it dry.
  9. If you have a vented gas fireplace, examine the outside vent and remove debris such as leaves or bird nests.
  10. Check your carbon monoxide detector is operating appropriately.

Gas Fireplace Troubleshooting Tips

Fireplace Won’t Start

There could be several explanations why your fireplace won’t turn on. Pull off the decorative plate beneath your fireplace to gain entry to its parts.

  1. Is a breaker tripped? Check your home’s electrical panel and adjust breakers as necessary.
  2. Is the gas running? Ensure the valve is in the “open” setting.
  3. Is the pilot light on? If it has blown out, follow manufacturer instructions to relight it. Fasten the vent cap to block drafts from extinguishing it.
  4. Pilot light lights but won’t stay on? There could be trouble with the thermocouple, a metal safety sensor that monitors gas flow.
  5. Pilot light stays on but fireplace won’t heat? It could be the thermopile, a metal piece that transforms heat to electricity to open the gas valve.

If you suspect there’s a problem with the thermocouple or thermopile, get in touch with us for service.
