Here are all the requirements you should follow in order for your photo to be accepted by US Department of State. Otherwise, your whole application will be rejected without any notification, and you can not even know this happened. Your photos or digital images must be:
1-In color
2-image’s total height from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head. View the Photo Composition Template for more size requirement details.
3-Taken within the last 6 months to reflect your current appearance
4-Taken in front of a plain white or off-white background
5-Taken in full-face view directly facing the camera
6-With a neutral facial expression and both eyes open
7-Taken in clothing that you normally wear on a daily basis
8-Uniforms should not be worn in your photo, except for religious clothing that is worn daily.
9-Do not wear a hat or head covering that obscures the hair or hairline unless worn daily for a religious purpose. Your full face must be visible, and the head covering must not cast any shadows on your face.
10-Headphones, wireless hands-free devices, or similar items are not acceptable in your photo.
11-Eyeglasses are no longer allowed in new visa photos, except in rare circumstances when eyeglasses cannot be removed for medical reasons; e.g., the applicant has recently had ocular surgery, and the eyeglasses are necessary to protect the applicant’s eyes. A medical statement signed by a medical professional/health practitioner must be provided in these cases. If the eyeglasses are accepted for medical reasons:
-The frames of the eyeglasses must not cover the eye(s).
-There must not be glare on eyeglasses that obscures the eye(s).
-There must not be shadows or refraction from the eyeglasses that obscure the eye(s).
12-If you normally wear a hearing device or similar articles, they may be worn in your photo.
13-Resolution and size: A digital Green Card photo should be at least 600 x 600 pixels and no larger than 1200 x 1200 pixels in size. The image’s height and width in pixels must be equal in order for the dimensions to have a square aspect ratio. A scanned image should have a resolution of at least 300 dpi and, ideally 600 dpi. Additionally, a printed photo can only be scanned if it is 2 x 2 inches in size (51mmx51mm).
At your immigration visa interview, you must also present 2 (two) identical printed photos if you are applying for an immigrant visa using Form DS-260 or if you are a Diversity Visa Selectee. The printed photos must be 2 x 2 inches in size (51mmx51mm).
If necessary, you can compress the image to make it smaller than the allowed file size. Just be certain that the compression ratio is 20:1 or less.
14- Photo quality: The image needs to be clear, sharp, and of high quality. No visible pixels or blurring is allowed. There must be no fold or scratch marks on the scanned image. Additionally, make sure the image is free of any discernible scanning dots.
15- Head in the DV US Lottery photo:
The distance between your chin and the tip of your hair in the US Green Card photograph must be between 1 inch and 1 3/8 inch (between 25 and 35 mm). Make sure your head is between 50% and 69 percent of the image’s total height, which is calculated from the top of the head (including hair) to the bottom of the chin if you’re uploading a digital photo.
