In my years of literary activity, in my songs, I have faced this question many times, "What exactly is the difference between poetry and song?" Although poetry and song both boil from the heart of feeling and language, but their path and function are different. In the following, I will express my point of view about these differences in a clear and understandable way.
1. Function: A poem to be read, a song to be heard.
And the reason for making and singing is for this reason, but it is private. The song is meant to be heard, to be accompanied by the rhythm, and eventually to come out of a sonic bottleneck. In poetry, the poet can freely use metaphor, complex imagery and layers of meaning. The audience expects to find out the depth of the poem with a little reflection. But the song is the language of everyday conversation. It should be simple, fluent and understandable; Not only for music singers, but also for street people. If the song is too complicated, it will distance itself from the audience's ears and feelings.
3. Weight and musicality
The poem may or may not have weight;
Whether it is in sonnet, nimai, or white poetry, the poet is free.
But the song always needs rhythm;
Even when it is written apparently freely, there is still beat, repetition and compositional ability in it. The songwriter must arrange the words in such a way that the composer can easily create a melody on it.
4. Structure: The freedom of the poem against the framework of the song. The poem has different structures: ghazal, quatrain, white, nimai, etc., but these structures are dependent on the literary needs of the text. Music gives a frame to the song.
5. The experience of the audience: lingering in the poem, the feeling of a moment in the song
The poem is usually read slowly;
the audience pauses, thinks, reads again.
But the song is a momentary experience. The rhythm is heard, the sound conveys the feeling and the words must have an effect at the same moment.
