Did you know the Eiffel Tower can grow by up to 15 centimeters (almost 6 inches) on a hot summer day? This is because the iron structure expands slightly as the temperature rises. The clever engineers who designed the tower actually accounted for this by building it with slightly loose rivets at the base. This allows the structure to sway slightly in the wind without buckling, and also gives it room to expand and contract with temperature changes.
