ICT Industry in India: Government’s Measures & Policies for Improvement

Abstract

According to India brand equity foundation, India with approximately 67 percent of the US$ 124-130 billion market, is the world’s largest sourcing destination for the information and communication technologies (ICT). This progressive industry has contributed to the economic transformation of India and changed the perception of this country in the global economy.

The increase in demand for Indian software experts who are mostly trained in English language and generally are paid fewer salaries, on the average one-fifth of the salaries in most developed countries, has resulted in more supportive measures and policies of Indian government for improvement of information technology-related startups and businesses.

However, being a member of the world trade organization (WTO) causes India to deal with the international trade-ups and downs the same way as enjoying its profits. for instance, in the most recent annual gathering of India's IT service providers in Mumbai, the mood was both anxious and excited about the Trump presidency and Brexit, as well as the overhauling of India's own digital infrastructure.
While the companies are right to be concerned about the threat of an isolationist and protectionist US, they need to act quickly to grasp the opportunities in front of them, surrounding digital transformation, customer experience and the use of machine learning and other forms of automation both in the US end around the world (report by NASSCOM Community, 2017).

The present study has the following objectives:
1. To study the historical background of the ICT industry in the world and India
2. To examine the role of the government of India in pre-independence and post-colonial eras in the development of IT Industry through policies.
3. To trace the opportunities to notice and challenges to handle with Indian government on the way of improvement of Information and communication technologies, and the related sectors.
