A Conversation About Healthcare Law With Nurse And Attorney Irnise F. Williams

In the latest episode of the Caring Support Podcast, we sat down with Irnise F. Williams, Esq, a nurse lawyer from the United States. We spoke about the fact that she has been able to find a perfect balance between two fields as different as healthcare and the law, and many other things related to the two. Overall, it was a smart and captivating conversation that we are sure our audience will benefit from. Keep reading to find out what she told us.Healthcare Law With Nurse And Attorney Irnise F. WilliamsIrnise, what came first in your life, your love for healthcare or the law?Being a nurse was something that I always dreamed of. I grew up around my grandparents who were sickly, so I was always around nurses and doctors. And I feel like back then it wasn't as rushed of a process. You could actually spend time with your physician and get to know your physician and they knew your entire family, and that was the experience that I wanted to provide for other patients as well. But then I got into healthcare and I realized it wasn't that intimate, that many times you have a very short period of time for caring for your patients, and I quickly decided I wanted to have another option, so I went to law school but I stayed in healthcare. When I graduated, I had a hard time trying to get people to understand the value of nursing outside of the hospital setting. People understand that nurses care for patients, but they don't understand that nurses are part of the technology world now, that nurses are essentially specialized in so many different things inside of healthcare systems as well as in community health. And they just couldn't understand why a nurse would become a lawyer. That's what they would say in my interviews. Or they would ask "what kind of value do you bring with your background?" And I'm just like "I am task oriented, I can multitask in a very high pressured environment." And especially these things are not necessarily life or death on the legal side, but in my old job, it was and people really had a hard time understanding that. And so I got tired of trying to prove myself. And I ended up staying in healthcare a few years longer than I expected. And then, of course, the pandemic did what pandemics do, and it shook a lot of people up and it shook me up. And I said, "OK, if my life ended tomorrow, would I be happy about what I was doing?" And although I'm always proud to be a nurse and I'm a nurse at heart, I knew that I had more things that I could do, especially with my background. So that's kind of how I reemerged back into the legal world, even though I've had my license for about seven years. How have you been able to combine two fields that seem so different from one another?Everything in health care is heavily regulated. I think that we as healthcare practitioners only see the clinical side of what we do but everything we do is essentially approved or not approved by a government agency and by all types of regulators. The federal government has their hands on everything that we do, how we care for our patients, what happens to our patients when they leave the hospital, how we interact and communicate with each other, and how we get access to information from one provider to the next. All of that is heavily regulated, but clinicians don't understand the law and those who are creating the regulations don't understand what clinicians really do, and there has to be a voice in between that kind of bridges it without it necessarily being always at the head. So many times when issues are fixed in healthcare, it's because there's a huge issue like the pandemic, and now we're trying to go back and find a solution where I'm telling people we don't have to wait until we're at that boiling point, that we can actually do a lot of proactive and preventative advocacy to have conversations with regulators and government agencies to let them know what it's really like to care for patients. And so I have served initially as an educator. So I got on social media to educate healthcare providers on systems. What is happening outside of your unit? What is happening outside of your hospital? And outside of your town to get people to start thinking bigger and systematically. And then, as those people started to say "hey, I'm tired, I'm burned out, I want to get out of direct patient care, but I still want to have some type of healthcare business," I started helping them understand the regulations, the scope of practice, how they can protect their license, their practice and their patients, and bridging that gap for them because they would go talk to lawyers who understood business or understood the law, but didn't understand what a nurse practitioner was, what a CRNA was; they didn't understand the scope of practice and the risk and liabilities that came with that. And so people were left with unanswered questions which can be super risky for patients. Being able to bridge that gap and provide information and resources, consultations, and sometimes compliance and legal resources for those clients has kind of been what my practice has been built off of. RPN vs. RN - What are the differences? It's great that you have your own law office, specializing in helping healthcare organizations thrive. What are the most common cases you work on?A lot of people initially just want their questions answered. I do a lot of consultations with clients, just helping them understand the lay of the land. If a nurse looking to get into business, they need to figure out many things, from something as simple as opening up a business bank account and getting all the documentation in order, all the way to the types of services that they can provide in their state based on the regulations. I provide that foundational support. Then some clients decide, "OK, I know what I know, but I have a lot of things that I don't know. I need some additional support." And so there are a few different ways that people work with me. Either they come on and they get access to all of these tools and resources that I created so that they can be successful in business, protect their business, protect their patients, and protect their license; or they come on and then they do some consulting with me where I help them bridge the gap in their lack of education. A lot of my clients are essentially well-seasoned healthcare practitioners who just don't understand business and entrepreneurship and don't really know where to go. I feel like the business world is a monster and if you go into it, you can get easily overwhelmed. Entrepreneurship is a whole other beast and getting into can be extremely overwhelming. You're getting information from every different person on social media or online and in all of these different places, and sometimes people just need a little bit, enough to kind of get them to the next phase until they can kind of take on more. Most of my clients are nurses or nurse practitioners. I do have a few providers and physicians who are also working with me. Then I work with a couple of healthcare tech companies as they begin to expand into different states and really kind of understand the regulations on that end. Nurse Practitioner vs DoctorIn your experience, what are the most frequent challenges faced by healthcare workers who want to start their own businesses, like their own clinics or private practices, for instance? Most people come in and just want to know what they can do with the license they have. And then, those who are advanced practitioners, such as nurse practitioners and physicians, usually want to know what they can delegate because they can't do it all on their own. They're trying to find the clarity and these "gray areas" that are just not well explained. I feel like here in the US things can be very murky in areas that are profitable because the more people get into it, the less profitable it is for those who are actually in it. And there are a lot of regulations that may not be necessary or are just outdated, but they haven't removed them and you still kind of have to adhere to them. That's where I come in, to provide that clarity. And even if we don't have a specific answer, we then begin to put things in place to make sure that if any issues ever arise, you have a plan. On the other side of that, it is "when do I bring in marketing?" So we talk about how to build awareness for your practice. How to not burn yourself out. If you're leaving a situation where you're already burned out, you're going to get into entrepreneurship and it's going to burn you out as well because it's even more work since you're doing everything versus just collecting a paycheck and showing up three days a week. And then we talk about what they do and what you don't know. I tell my clients, knowledge is powerful, but sometimes you can't learn it all at once. You can't take on all that information. One thing that healthcare providers are not good at is trying to figure out how to make money. They're good at what they do, but they don't understand the operational cost that goes into it. And so I'm like, "OK, if you're charging this much, how many people do you need to see? If you need to see 700 people to make $10,000, you're not going to be able to make that number ever." And so that's difficult. And I think now in the tech world, it's all about systems, automation, and workflows. How do you make this as easy as possible so that people can get access to what you have? What are your recommendations for healthcare workers who want to go on their own, but are afraid to do so?I tell people to go to the library and get some books because what I feel is happening is that everyone's getting their information from social media, which is short form, and it's not comprehensive and it's not giving people a long-term or long-form strategy. So you'll hear someone's strategy that they explain in a 15-second video or 30-second video, but they don't really go into all of the details. And I tell people, get a book, pick a strategy, use the whole strategy, and not just a little piece of it. And if it doesn't work, then pivot. But if you take a thousand pieces of information and try to put it all together, you're going to find your business in disarray. And I think that's hard for people to actually sit down and go pick up a book and find some time to dig into what it is that they're seeking to do. There is so much quality information about starting a business, growing a business, scaling a business, finding clients, all of the things that people have questions about. But people don't necessarily want to spend the time doing the research before they take that next step. I see people who are $10,000, $15,000, $20,000 in and then they're saying, "Well, I don't even know how I'm going to get my first customer." And I'm like, "well how did you get this far?" "How did you spend thousands of thousand dollars on training?" So I tell people that once you are competent at the things that you can do and the things that you know, nobody can sell you on something that you don't need. And there are things that you need in business. There are resources, amazing tools and projects that are out there essentially helping business owners do it better. But then you can't use every system. You can't use ClickUp and Asana and everything else. You can't use it all just because you feel like that's what everyone is using to build a better business. And I think that when you have good companies that have good integrity, that's what you're looking for. But when you're rushed, you don't have the time to find that. Finally, is there anything you would like all healthcare workers listening to this podcast to know?I always tell people that nurses and even other healthcare providers are amazing business owners. We have all the skills, we operate with them daily through the tasks that we do, caring for others, thinking about what's most important to other people, and figuring out cost-effective solutions. We are the hackers of the hospital, trying to make things work and tie things together for other people. And you can do that in business, but you just have to understand how it works, just shift your perspective. Instead of necessarily caring for a patient in the traditional sense, you're caring for them, but you're taking in a lot of other factors as well. And even when people come to me, I still refer them to books. I'll say, "Hey, you need to read this marketing book. You need to read this because it's a confidence builder." I can tell you anything, and yes, it may work, but there's something about when you know it for yourself, how powerful that is. And so I want people to stop making excuses like that you don't know enough, or you can't learn it, or you're you know, you didn't have a business major. Most people who are business owners didn't go to business school. They're essentially people who just had an idea and were gutsy enough to go after it. And so I really encourage people to just try, start small. Don't leave your job until you know you have an income that you can essentially replace, but start actually applying the skills that you use every single day into a business, and potentially you'll be able to see kind of just a different outlook and perspective. How to Find Registered Practical Nurse (RPN) Jobs in CanadaAdditionally, I would say that even if you plan to stay at your job full time, there are still so many options and opportunities to get into entrepreneurship as a side hustle. Or something you can do when you retire, or just something that essentially fuels your passion. And it doesn't have to be healthcare-related. So many people who are in health care are multi-talented and multifaceted, and they bring so much value to other people in other industries. So don't feel pigeonholed to having to start a healthcare business. There are so many other ideas that you can pursue. If you're an artist become an artist, right? Still, start a business to protect your business and protect your art, and make sure everything is legal and legit. But don't keep yourself pigeonholed in this one industry just because that's what you do every day. That's your career path. That's an option. That's a job. But if you really have other passions, go after them. It's worth it. Literally, I woke up one day and said, "if I died of COVID tomorrow, would I be happy?" And I said, no. And the next day I started back on the mission of fulfilling my own dreams. And I'm so much happier for it. And I definitely want that for as many people as, you know, who want that for themselves.
Let's talk about iron deficiency, a condition that affects mostly women and children worldwide. Our latest episode of the Caring Support Podcast explores this condition and provides valuable information from an actual patient, Jen Logan, who happens to be our company's VP of Product and Research. Keep reading to find out how the conversation went.*DISCLAIMER*The content presented both in this blog post and the aforementioned podcast is for informational purposes only and is not intended to serve as diagnosis or medical advice. Always consult your healthcare provider for information about specific medical conditions before making any healthcare decisions.Everything You Need To Know About Iron Deficiency - A Conversation With Jen LoganTell us a bit about well, a lot about your journey with iron deficiency. How did you find out? What symptoms did you initially have?JEN LOGAN: I think I was iron deficient for a very, very long time, but being a mom (I have two kids) you're kind of told you're going to be really tired like it's the new normal. So, I took that to heart, right? Like this is a new normal or sometimes you don't get enough sleep, like your 8 hours of sleep. I eat well. I do have a lot of meat in my diet, lots of leafy green vegetables, nuts, and dried fruit, which are all really high in iron so I never put two and two together. It wasn't until I had a specific test, the ferritin test, that I found out what was going on.There are two tests that you can take to indicate if you have low levels of iron and know if it's you are iron deficient or anemic. The first one, I think the go-to one, is the hemoglobin test that looks at the hemoglobin levels in your blood. And I think that's the most common one. But you can also take a ferritin test to look at your ferritin stores. And for me, it was that test that indicated that I was iron deficient. My hemoglobin was quite low but still normal. Hemoglobin carries oxygen around your body, and you need iron to make hemoglobin. However, for me, it was really the ferritin levels that were extremely low. So, you can have low ferritin but still, kind of be OK. But mine was like very, very low and so that's when my doctor, who had ordered that test for me, said "It's really low. We're going to have to put you on iron supplements to boost that."When it comes to my symptoms, when I look back, it was just being really tired. And as I said, I associated that with like having two kids, the COVID-19 pandemic, and just doing a lot.. working full time, working on a startup as well. You just think "well, that's life, right? I'm just going to be tired for a while." Also, concentration was a big one for me. Particularly during COVID, it got worse, probably with levels of stress as well. Sitting and concentrating at work was becoming really, really difficult. Even if I had slept, even if I had no distractions, it was difficult. And that, I think, was bothering me the most. So, you can have an association of symptoms with an iron deficiency that's more like mental health symptoms, which are not as well known. There's a link between not being able to concentrate or feeling anxious, those types of symptoms are now being linked with iron deficiencies as well. And I found that for me anyways, that was the most concerning. And so when I started to do my own research and look into that, I started to make that connection.I remember my kids would want to go to the park and I would do it. I would say "yeah, let's go" because that's what good moms do, but at the same time, there was a lacklustre about it. You know, I have to leave the couch to go outside. I got to take the dog with me. As well, I've been a runner my whole life, it's part of my coping mechanism. If I feel stressed, or if I want to clear my head, I would be to go for a run. And even that was becoming really laborious to the point where I just didn't feel like doing it.So for me, being iron deficient (I wasn't quite anemic) really impacted a lot of areas of my life and I'm a real nerd too, but I just didn't make the association, which is why I thought it would be important to talk about it because I think women when we have kids, we know we're going to be tired and we think we'll get through it. However, if there's an easy fix for 9% of women in the population, it's worth getting checked out and it's worth getting the right test, which is getting that ferritin test done as well alongside looking at your hemoglobin, which I think was missed.Other symptoms of iron deficiency are tiredness, lack of energy, shortness of breath, noticeable heartbeat, heart palpitations, pale skin, headaches, and you get ringing in your ear as well. Sometimes it can taste strange. However, these are things I never experienced. It was more like concentration and tiredness. Other symptoms like feeling itchy and having a sore tongue happen when you're quite severely anemic, as well as hair loss, so if you're noticing more hair coming out, or pica, which is when you want to eat things that aren't food (concrete, dirt, etc.). If you start feeling like concrete really smells good all the time, which I kind of had when I was walking, that really smells good. That's because you're missing minerals in your body, and iron is one of those minerals. And as I said, there are now established links between mental health, so behaviours like having a hard time concentrating, mood swings, and irritability, and over time it could add to anxiety and depression. And for me, I could certainly see that if you don't have enough energy to go running and that's the way that you hold yourself together, that's your go-to, or you don't feel like you have enough energy to get off the couch and go for a walk if that's your go-to or whatever it is; that that can lead to depression or help lead to anxiety. If you can no longer do the things you enjoy or feel like you don't have the energy to do that, that can be a symptom of iron deficiency, whereas I think most people kind of just think tiredness and looking pale. What kind of treatment did your doctors recommend and what kind of lifestyle changes did you implement?JEN LOGAN: The first thing that my nurse practitioner offered was going on the (birth control) pill. Since women are more likely to have iron deficiency, as I said, 9% of women have low ferritin levels indicating iron deficiency, it has been linked to blood loss. One of the main things for women is if you suffer from menorrhagia, which is like periods, which I do, you can lose a lot of iron each month. Two pregnancies, so babies need iron, you get twice the volume of blood when you're pregnant, so you need more iron for that. Interestingly enough, when you give birth, that extra blood that you lose through childbirth should help protect you against iron loss. But I did have two C-sections as well. So you lose twice the amount of blood through two C-sections. And over time, even if you're eating well, you can be in a situation where you are not replenishing fast enough what you're losing. So for me, I just thought "No, I'm really healthy. I'm doing everything well," but I was just not filling that bucket up fast enough. That's my nurse practitioner recommended going on the (birth control) pill because it lessens your periods and helps with stemming the blood flow. For many, that might be a great option. For me, it wasn't. I don't like the hormones and like how I feel on it. And there are other drugs you can go on to shorten your periods, but there are risks of blood clots, which I wasn't too keen about, but it might be a great solution for some people. So what I did was take iron supplements, which wasn't great for my stomach to do continually, so I got an iron infusion. Now I take iron supplements in high doses when I am on my period. Research has shown if you take it every other night and double up, it absorbs better and it's easier on your stomach. And so I usually do about three times that. And I also have added beef liver to my diet. I'll eat that twice a week and there's just a whole host of other minerals in there. And you get everything you need from that.I will take ferritin tests throughout the year, maybe every three months, just to make sure that yes, I am on the right path, and that what I'm doing is working. What I didn't know or failed to know is that there are two things that can block the absorption of iron into your body. One of them is dairy, and so I have limited how much dairy I would have. I have also limited eating dairy when I'm having something that's high in iron. So, if there is a Philly cheesesteak going and I wanted the iron from that, I might just take the cheese off and leave the onions on the Philly cheesesteak would be great because vitamin C helps you absorb iron. The second one is the polyphenols in coffee, teas, and green teas, which also help block or don't let you absorb the iron that you want. So for me, it's really about looking at your food, looking at what nutrients you're getting from your food and doing the right timing for that. If you're somebody who survives on coffee because you're really tired and you have two creams, that's kind of like a double-edged sword because like some people's go-to is cream and coffee, and both those things can stop you from absorbing what you need. So that for me was a big piece of the puzzle as well, just being smart about what I'm eating, when I'm eating it.How have you been feeling after weeks of change, making so many changes and introducing the supplements? Have you noticed positive changes?JEN LOGAN: Yeah, big time. It's the gloss, it's the gloss that came back for me. And just realizing that, although some people might be tired because their kids keep them up and kids are tiring, I think I had like an extra weight and that's just been lifted. That's what I mean when I say that it's like the gloss comes back to your life. And I was always quite a high-energy person anyways, and I felt like that was just kind of taken away from me slowly. I think that the danger here is that it's not like all of a sudden you're iron deficient and one day you wake up and go "something's wrong, right?" No, it's slowly emptying. You don't notice it. And then you have kids and you're like "well, this is just it. Like, this is what kids do." So for me, I think it's just like the gloss has come back and I can concentrate at work, which was really stressing me out. I would just spend a lot more time trying to do the things that I would need to do and pull my attention back to it, and treatment really did alleviate that. When I started taking the supplements and when I got my iron infusion, you could see that kind of veil coming down and then you're like "oh, I got it I know what it is now."Any final thoughts on this topic?JEN LOGAN: Well, I would just say that, if you are feeling tired, it's just worth getting checked. Unfortunately, you would be looking at your blood, so there is a needle involved, and that might be a barrier to some people wanting to get checked, but it is definitely worth it. And I would say that getting both tests (hemoglobin and ferritin) is really important. Finally, I wanted to talk about this because our health care system is propped up, the majority, by women; women who are probably overworked, and have been through a pandemic. And if 9% of those women are suffering the way I was suffering, and they could fix that by taking iron supplements, adjusting what they eat or when they eat it, getting an iron transfusion, whatever they need, they may feel better I think it's a worthwhile thing to look into. So I figured I would spread the word about getting a ferritin test along with your hemoglobin and see where you lie. And if you need more iron, it is definitely worth it.About Jen LoganJen Logan is the VP of Product and Research at Caring Support.

We love a good success story, that's why for the past few weeks we have been reaching out to some of the many people who found the job of their dreams through our platform. Our idea is to shine a light on these happy stories and inspire others to keep going after their dreams. In this case, we had the pleasure to speak to Carron Bryan who walked us through her job hunt journey and provided us with valuable feedback. This is what Developmental Service Worker Carron Bryan told us:How Did You Learn About Caring Support?I was just job hunting and I think I saw probably a post online and then I created an account... well, I created a login and a password. Then periodically, I would get messages in my email saying that there were positions that I could apply for. And I applied for some positions via the platform. Can You Tell Me Briefly About Your Experience Signing Up For Caring Support?I have a diploma as a Developmental Service Worker (DSW), but I can work as a Personal Support Worker (PSW). The company that hired me, they were looking for companions. It's almost the same as a PSW, it's just that you don't perform certain functions like you don't provide personal care, you would just go to sit with the clients, probably assist them with any little chores they may have, stuff like that. What Else Do You Remember About The Signup Process? It was pretty much easy. I just went through the steps, I filled in my personal information you know, name, address, telephone, and email. And then I was asked to upload some documents which would include a police check, and the certifications that I would have had, I didn't use a video, but I think I attached a copy of my resume and just anything that would be of value to help employers to see me and, you know, probably reach out to me to see if they would be interested in setting up an interview. How Long Were You On The Platform Before Your Current Employer Recruited You?Actually, it wasn't long. Probably a couple of weeks. Actually, before you guys, I was really searching a lot and I just couldn't find anything, but once I got onto your platform then it's like the gates just opened up for me from there. What Else Were You Doing As Part Of Your Job Hunt?I signed up with multiple websites that my friend told me about and I was just doing random Google searches, and I was also searching on LinkedIn to find jobs. So, yeah, those were the ways that I was doing because I mean, I was new to Canada. So it's not like I've been here for a while and I know a lot of stuff. I was just trying to navigate my way around that.Did You Visit The Platform Frequently Before Getting Hired? How Often? As soon as I saw an email pop up, I would log in and checked.Read More: Best Practices For Staffing And Training In Senior Care - A Conversation With Jennifer LagemannWhat Device Did You Use To Visit The Platform?I normally use my cellphone most time, but sometimes if I am near my laptop, I would log on on my laptop; but most times my cellphone.Did You Apply To Your Current Job Or Were You Contacted By The Employer?I applied. I think I applied for the job via the platform and then someone from the office contacted me and they arranged an interview. They, I believe, used the in-app messaging feature first and thereafter they communicated to me via email.Do You Remember Your First Conversation With The Employer?I think the first conversation was that they found my resume online. I don't remember if they mentioned the platform, but then they said that they wanted to set up an interview with me and we did the interview. And after the interview, they let me know if I was successful, then I would move on. They would prepare a contract and send it to me and then I would be a part of the orientation exercise that they were planning. What Caught Your Eye The Most About The Employer?Oh, the name of the employer is Home Concierge. What caught my eye? To be honest, I have a passion for helping others. I believe that if I wasn't on this planet for that purpose, I wouldn't be happy at all. So the fact that I was able to help people who have different illnesses, and different needs, so to speak, is what attracted me to the company. And I've always been very good at working with seniors, even though my experience was in Human Resource Management. But in the job that I did for 12 years, I used to interact a lot with pensioners, so that was like the starting point for me, interacting with seniors and with the elderly. So that's what attracted me to the job.How Long Did The Recruitment Process Last?It wasn't long, probably about two weeks. How Did You Feel When You Got The Job Offer?I was excited because I was searching for a very long time and I really wanted to get out there and get in the field. And then what was important to me, because I have a son, so it's not so easy to find jobs that are flexible, is that I was able to pick up shifts that are convenient for me, so that's another thing that was a plus too.How Do You Feel About Having Joined Caring Support?I feel great. I mean, as I said, I still get emails from you guys and I still log in and check you know, even though I am employed. But yeah, I'm happy that I made the decision to create that login and that password and just created a profile because that's where it all started. As I said, it opened the gateway for me.Read More: What No One Tells You About Being A CaregiverWould You Recommend Caring Support To Your Friends And Colleagues?Yeah, because I guess persons sometimes tend not to have the patience to, you know, follow a process right through. But if you don't do that, then, first of all, you won't get noticed, and then you won't be able to give yourself the right exposure because you don't have all the information that is necessary to complete your profile. Get it up to completeness. So it's important that you do so because you're only shortchanging yourself, eventually. How Would You Describe Your Overall Experience With Caring Support? It's a very easy platform to work with. You just have to follow the steps and try to complete your profile as best as possible, so upload all the relevant documents that they ask you to upload. And once you do that, you should be fine, you'll be well on your way to marketing yourself because at the end of the day, your resume or your profile, I should say, is really your marketing tool, you know, to get you out there, to be noticed by employers. So once you do that, you should be well on your way to securing gainful employment.Read More:The Nurse Informant Reveals How To Succeed In NursingSupporting Patient Engagement Through Digital Health Literacy With Dr. Maida AffanAt Caring Support we are very pleased to be part of this success story and excited for what the future will bring for DSW Carron Bryan. Now, we encourage all of you out there looking for jobs in the healthcare field to join Caring Support and let our platform open a new path ahead of you, like we did for Carron. And if you are already on the platform and have been successful too, then we would also like to share your story!
Supporting Patient Engagement Through Digital Health Literacy With Dr. Maida Affan

On our latest episode of the Caring Support Podcast, we talked about patient engagement, digital health, and much more with Dr. Maida Affan, a healthcare marketing and communications professional with experience in clinical, wellness content marketing, and digital strategies. This is what she told us:5 Questions On Supporting Patient Engagement Through Digital Health Literacy1. What is the biggest challenge that affects patient engagement in healthcare?First, let's define really what patient engagement is. It refers to enabling and empowering patients to access and apply relevant health information to improve their own health. In other words, it's really about patients playing an active role in their own health care. And that's what we need more of, right? When patients are more engaged, involved, aware, and knowledgeable about their health conditions, that's really when they feel empowered and confident in terms of making more informed health decisions, but also share a better relationship with their providers. So, coming back to the question, when we talk about challenges, we can really broadly sort of categorize them into two parts. We have patient challenges and then we have challenges on the provider side as well, because patient engagement is a two-way street. Experts are realizing, especially more so after the pandemic, that health care all over the world is seeing this digital transformation. And so we understand that health care is unique; it has its own unique challenges when compared to other industries. One of the main challenges from the patient side is that they're still a little bit confused. People say there's resistance to change, but I think it's more than that. I think it's sort of fear of the unknown because clinicians and patients both, they've been so used to doing things a certain way. Even simple things like symptom management or wound care and rehabilitation, and mental health therapy... all of this has always been face-to-face. All of this has either been resolved by doing a hospital stay or a hospital admission and not through a camera or not at home. But now because of digital advancements, we know that these things can be taken care of at home. More than 80% of problems can be solved virtually and can be cured and treated at home and managed and monitored at home as well, which is great because it reduces the influx of patients at the hospital. It reduces the burden on an already burdened health care system. But then it's really about communicating back to the patients, letting them know that this works and really gaining their trust. And I think that the first step of patient engagement is really to alleviate their confusion. But how do you do that?Patients might be aware of telemedicine. I'm sure their primary care providers from their community clinics are telling them "I will just call you, we'll give you a call or you can contact us." But then it's about going one step further. It's really about the patient experience through digital pathways. And that's where it boils down to poor health and digital health literacy. We have to understand that digital health now, it's at the forefront, historically speaking, and that patient engagement is at the forefront of research, policy, and public health. It's about making the population at large healthier.Read More: All about caregiver jobs2. Why do you think we're still dealing with the digital divide that separates patients from past generations from digital natives?Number one, I think it's because we need to identify those gaps, understanding that it is a huge problem and it's something that is affecting patients' lives. It's affecting the health care ecosystem. And then coming together, aligning appropriate and relevant stakeholders, and finding a unified solution for this. However, with health care digitization, clinicians are just expected to sort of turn on their laptops in their clinics and go online and have these telemedicine appointments and just do everything digitally. But a lot of the clinicians, we know that a large proportion of them belong to an older physician cohort and they might not be digital tech-savvy. They might not have the proper training. There's a lack of training even among the younger clinicians because they're already so pressed for time and they're experiencing burnout and they have so much administrative work. So I think there are a lot of factors here.I want to mention here a survey that I read a couple of days ago in which they surveyed over 100 doctors or healthcare executives in a healthcare organization and asked them for their opinion on what the top deterrent was in terms of patient outcomes and patient engagement, and the number one cause that they found was a gap in health communication and even more the supply chain optimization. And so that really goes to show that physicians and clinicians do realize that there's a gap there but I think the solution is that providers at the top need to be more perceptive and receptive and need to understand and hear the voices of clinicians and patients based on their outcomes and need to come together to really address these concerns. If we don't, nothing is going to get better.I think I'd like to mention some of the five A's of patient engagement, so to speak. So this is sort of like a framework of patient engagement. And it can easily be applied through digital clinical pathways:Ask. Ask about the health behaviours of the patient.Advice. Once you know the sort of health behaviours patients are already used to, you would advise them to modify these unhealthy behaviours.Assess. This means assessing the willingness of the patient to change.Assist. How can you assist them in this behaviour change?Arrange. Schedule follow-ups to see how patients are progressing. All of this is done digitally. The patient doesn't have to keep on going back and forth for physical visits. This is done through a patient portal in patient-accessible charts, which are electronic health records. It's a database where patient information is stored securely. And so patients have access to all these doctor's notes and their own medical records. All of this information is communicated to and from the clinician or the provider through digital means. Once the doctor or the clinician has all that information, they're in a better position to assess thatdata and be ready for a follow-up visit, either virtually or in person. We know it's possible because it's being done. We just need to do it in a more seamless way.Read More:‍Everything About Medical Lab AssistantsTop Health Care Services in OntarioWhat is a Registered Nurse (RN)?3. Why is healthcare so slow to adopt new channels of engagement that are easier to use and help reduce the digital divide? If you look at it holistically speaking, there's a lot of concern around financial benefits and around an ROI (return of investment), so to speak. My argument is that if we're using technology for better patient care, why aren't we using or leveraging the same technology for better patient communication? We've seen studies and reports and all these different reports that come out. They've shown that people or organization agents are willing to invest in health care technology that is directly related to patient care, but they're not willing to invest in patient communication or engagement tools. On the flip side, when we talk about ROIs, studies do show that there is a financial benefit to it. There is a visible ROI. There was a study that I was reading that showed that physicians were able to make $20,000 per year per physician. There was an increase of $20,000 per year per physician. And there was a 20% increase in the patient influx to the health care organization because of better patient engagement because patients felt more involved. There was trust that was developed with that particular organization. That goes to show if you put the infrastructure in place and if you laid the foundation down, you will see a better result. When we talk about the clinical outcomes of patient engagement, we can see that they're more involved, there's a reduced cost of care, and there's improved self-management. They feel more confident, and more in control. Ultimately, they're more likely to follow the doctor's orders, adhere to their medication, and go to their follow-ups on time. And all of this in the long term, there's reduced hospital admissions, there's the reduced burden on the health care economy. Right.Something that me and my team at Seven Health emphasize is patient communication. And we need to understand that the means or the mode of communication has also changed. The means of marketing have also changed, just like the needs of receiving and providing care have changed because of digitization. If we talk about how much digital content we consume in a day, it may total up to 6 hours and some minutes daily of digital information or online information that we're consuming, which is why patients really want bit size information, digestible information, relevant information, and then personalized information that really incites them to take some sort of action.4. How can organizations in the healthcare sector better support patients to ensure better engagement with them?Fundamentally speaking, if I were to step back and look at this more high level, this is the kind of conversation that happens in anything related to stuff that we do in life. It's like, let's say a personal relationship or maybe any kind of business relationship you have with somebody in sales or account manager. Don't assume things, you've got to communicate. Put yourself in the shoes and these people. I think a lot of times it comes down to empathy. We just really need to be more mindful and aware that if we were in their position, what would we want to know? What would really matter to us right now? Ask, find out. Like, just find.Another point is sort of providing more value for the patients and working towards health equity, which is so important This connects with the notion of the consumerization of health care. For so long, patients have not been treated as consumers and now it's time to treat them as consumers and incentivize health care. That's another point that I missed. All the other industries are incentivizing their products, so I think this industry has to work on health equity.Furthermore, it's all about giving them need-to-know information instead of nice-to-know information. Nobody has time for "nice". More and more health care experts are realizing this, but it's really about those decision-makers adding clinicians, adding people from the health care background to the decision-making table. If you're making a tool for a patient, you need to have them on board.5. What are the best strategies you can think of to promote digital health literacy and empower patients?Excellent question, because that's what I do, right? So first, of all, you have to meet the patients where they are. And what I mean by that is most of the patients are online, right? So if you have a backache or you woke up with a headache in the morning, the first thing you're going to do is Google, maybe the symptoms of your headache or whatever you're going through, instead of calling a doctor. That's the natural sort of behaviour that we've all sort of adapted. And so what I mean by meeting patients where they are is that you have to have your bases covered. And I think digital technology is an enabler and it empowers everyone. So, it's essential to be on those relevant channels and to have a decent website with all the necessary information, a Google My Business for your local community and some sort of social media presence as well because people are on social media all the time. And then you, you know, depending on what your goals are and your objectives and your marketing objectives are, that's when we start to sort of narrow down and focus in on your messaging or narrative and how you want to communicate and how you want to relate to your audience. So, again, make it concise, provide need-to-know information and make sure that whatever information you're putting out there is fact-checked and that it has some sort of supporting reference. And even if there's some sort of regulation that you have to abide by and you can't advertise your core product or service, you can still become a hub of trust for health information and a resource of health information that patients can turn to.About The Interviewee:Dr. Maida Affan has a diverse background in working across interdisciplinary sectors such as health education, advocacy, digital health, telemedicine, EMRs, medical devices, pharmaceuticals, health-tech startups, wellness, and healthcare consumer goods.
At Disinfect & Fog, we receive numerous questions from customers and people in general about disinfection, sanitization, products and services. Recently, one of the most common questions has been "how often should I disinfect my space?" So, in this article, we will answer that question in detail. Keep reading to learn all about recommended disinfection frequency. Read More: How Often Should You Disinfect a Surface To Kill Covid-19?How Often Should I Disinfect My Space?Viruses, bacteria, and other germs are present everywhere. They circulate among us, land on surfaces, and multiply when they find the right conditions. When this happens freely, without any physical or chemical intervention to eliminate these contaminants, they tend to spread and their presence can lead to diseases, infections and allergies. This is the reason why we should disinfect our spaces as often as necessary, depending on the frequency of use, number of people in the space, and other factors like ventilation, activities conducted in the place, and more.Let's think of some examples:A public elevator in a mall used daily by hundreds of people should be disinfected multiple times a day, as it lacks ventilation and it is safe to say that some of its users could be sick and actively spreading germs just by breathing or speaking in there.A taxi should ideally be ventilated after each passenger and disinfected at the end of each day to protect the health and safety of the driver and its customers.A private office should be disinfected once a week to control the growth of bacteria and other germs, while a public office should be disinfected every day as clients come and go and can bring exterior contaminants with them.A washroom in a gym used by a couple hundred people a day should be disinfected at least twice a day, considering that sweaty gym members use those facilities to clean up after their workouts and surfaces can get heavily soiled and contaminated as a result.A house should be disinfected once a week (except for the kitchen and bathrooms which should be treated more often) as long as all family members are healthy.Read More: How to Disinfect Safely During PregnancyAll of these examples intend to demonstrate that there isn't a one-fits-all answer to the "how often should I disinfect my space?" question, as it always depends on different factors. It is always recommended to use our better judgement to determine the perfect frequency that will keep the risk of spreading any infectious diseases and infections to a minimum. Types of Disinfectants and How to Make the Best Choice for Your FacilityRecommended Frequency for Fogging TreatmentsIf you have a large commercial, residential, or industrial space to disinfect and you can't decide how often you should disinfect for optimum results, you should know that our company is always available to help you create comprehensive disinfection and fogging treatment plans to suit your needs, using the latest technology in disinfection and the best products on the market. These are our recommendations:For BusinessesBusinesses are usually hotspots for contaminants, considering the high traffic of employees and customers they usually get. On top of that, businesses that depend completely on air conditioning and heat, and don't have good ventilation or an air filtration system installed, are also likely to develop mould, mildew, allergens, and even odours. So, based on our extensive experience, we usually recommend daily treatments in commercial settings, especially those that involve food preparation (restaurants, cafes and bars) and those that involve physical contact with clients, like spas, hair salons, and barber shops. Businesses with less traffic, like offices, can get away with weekly or biweekly treatments. The Best Way To Disinfect Business Offices? How to Sanitize Large Spaces With Great Results?Disinfecting Golf Facilities and Equipment? How To Disinfect Medical Clinics? For HomesFor homes, it really depends on the volume of people going into and out of your house every week and the presence of sick people. If your kid's friends are frequently over or you have your elderly parents visiting every weekend, we strongly recommend weekly treatments. If it's just you and your family, then focus on the kitchen and bathrooms, and plan general treatments once every two weeks. How to Make Sure you are Properly Disinfecting your Home and Workplace? Now, if a sick person or someone who tested positive for COVID-19 has been in your home recently, then you should make sure to clean and disinfect all the spaces where they spent time as soon as they leave. If it's a family member, then ensure that person is isolated and the areas where they are spending their time are closed off and disinfected as frequently as possible.Best Products to Disinfect Any SpaceLast but not least, at Disinfect & Fog we carry many disinfecting products and devices that will make your disinfection routine, whatever that may be, a breeze. Whether you disinfect your spaces daily, weekly, biweekly or even monthly (although we do not recommend waiting that long) you can be sure to find the products you need for your particular situation in our online shop.If you are not certain about what to look for, you can check our categories to see our individual selections for:Foggers and sprayers - For businesses and homesDisinfectants - All-natural, biodegradable and non-toxic.Disinfecting bundles - Find our best-selling packages herePersonal sanitizing devices - For all your on-the-go needsAnd you can also check what's on sale (there's always a great deal available!)If you have any other questions related to how often you should disinfect your space, methods, best practices, products or services, don't hesitate to contact us or leave us a comment below.Stay safe out there!Source: https://www.disinfectandfog.com/blog/how-often-should-i-disinfect-my-space

Job hunting for the very first time can be a stressful and confusing period, but it doesn't necessarily have to be. There are many strategies and tips new grads can implement to succeed in their search and start their careers on the right foot. And on that note, we have put together a Complete Guide on How to Find your First Job as a New Grad for all healthcare graduates out there who might need it.First things first...Is It Possible To Find Your First Job As A New Grad With No Experience? The very first question many new grads have is if it's possible to find the first job as a new grad with no experience at all. Some people would say the answer is no, and that's why so many students make great efforts to land as many internships as they can before graduating in hopes that having prior experience will help them get ahead when the job hunting time comes. There is nothing wrong with this strategy and we actually recommend it, but that doesn't mean that someone who never did an internship or a practicum won't ever land a full-time job. There are other ways to spark the interest of employers and get that first big break. So our answer is yes; it is very possible to find the first job as a new grad with no experience. Now, let's get to the point...How To Find Your First Job As A New Grad Step By StepTo help new grads with their job search, we have split the process into 5 steps. However, before getting started, there are certain things that candidates need to do such as identifying the type of job they want to target, making an inventory of their skills and qualifications, researching the top companies in their field of interest, and finding out about average salaries for their intended role and location. Completing these simple tasks will make all the difference by saving new grads time and helping them focus their efforts where they really need to, instead of figuring these things out randomly along the way. 34 Tips To Get Hired In Healthcare FasterHaving said all of this, let's get started with our step-by-step guide for finding the first job as a new grad:1. Build your resumeStep number one in any job hunting process is building your resume. Now, if you did your homework of making an inventory of your skills and qualifications, this will be a quick and easy task to complete.
What No One Tells You About Being A Caregiver - A Conversation With Nicole Dauz

Caring for other people is one of the hardest and most difficult things that anyone can do, but it also brings great joy and satisfaction to those who commit to it. Like in any other role, there are many lessons to be learned when one becomes a caregiver, either professionally or in a family setting. However, we believe this is something that doesn't get addressed as much as it should. So, to discuss this important topic further, we recently extended an invitation to our podcast to self-care coach and author Nicole Dauz, who shared those things that no one tells you about being a caregiver and much more about her own journey. Keep reading to find out.Nicole, You Are A Self-Care Coach Author And Family Caregiver. How Do You Help Other Caregivers Succeed?NICOLE DAUZ: I say that experience is my teacher. I use all of the lessons learned and all the tools and strategies that I've come across, and what's worked for me. And that's what I put together. I support fellow caregivers with a coaching program and a free online support group. You Also Wrote A Whole Book About Caregiving. What Can You Tell Us About It?NICOLE DAUZ: Yes, it's called "Self-care: From the Trenches...with Love, Humour & a Kick in the Pants" and it's really the subtitle that gives you the essence of the book. I wanted caregivers to really connect with it. I know self-care is a very divisive word and can turn people off, but it's really about me being cheeky because I'm like, "hey, I have a 16-year-old son, I have a 13-year-old daughter with an intellectual disability and autism and I still find time to put myself first... And I still do the work." I have worked at removing the barriers and the work in progress. But what I like to say is I reach out to people who support me. And then I turn around and then I offer that to others. I am both a student and a teacher. And so what this book does is it really allows people to look at the different parts of self-care. Each chapter in the book is standalone. We talk about things like the stories we tell ourselves, validation, worthiness, emotions, and energy. These aren't always things people associate with self-care but this is how I get to the importance of self-care because when caregivers will say oh, I don't like that word, can you use a different word?" I kind of like "oh, so if I change the word, you'll change your actions." Like, "why don't we unpack this?" What I'm hearing that caregiver say is "I don't like that word because I don't even feel worthy enough to take time." So that's why I love talking about self-care because it's linked with self-love and I say self-love is how we feel about ourselves. Self-care is the action. Self-care is actually how we show ourselves that we love ourselves. And that's why it is so important for this conversation to be had. My purpose is to change the conversation around caregiving. For me to say to caregivers, we are allowed to have meaningful lives. Especially parent caregivers. I'm only 13 years in, and I'm like, "holy sugar, I'm just getting started!" And if I didn't have these tools and strategies, I don't know where I'd be because there are still some days when I feel pushed to the edge, having a really bad day or a week, and I have to really ground myself and walk myself from the edge. And I don't say that lightly. Like, it can feel like a very isolating and lonely journey. And that kind of speaks to the paradox. I say that caregiving is full of paradoxes, and that's one of them, feeling so isolated and alone when we know that there are millions and millions of other caregivers out there doing the exact same work or role or support that we offer and love that we give to the person for whom we're caring. What Are Those Things No One Tells You About Being A Caregiver?NICOLE DAUZ: I'm going to go back to the paradox. The two things that no one tells you, in my opinion, are:The amount of negative emotions that you're going to feel and how it will actually surprise you. It can be a vicious circle at first until we talk about it. And that's why it's so important about having these conversations because every caregiver I've ever spoken with has confided or admitted to feeling the same. We're all human. And so it's the anger and the resentment about becoming a caregiver when we haven't signed up for it. And at the time, it's because we feel helpless, especially as a parent. So that comes out as anger, resentment, frustration, and worry. And then we feel guilt and shame because you're like "but I'm supposed to love this person. I shouldn't be angry." That was really hard at the beginning of the journey for me to come to terms with. The other part is how isolating it can feel because when we feel shame and these thoughts, they can be actions. Imagine we isolate ourselves because we don't even feel comfortable talking about it because we've just dumped all this shame on ourselves for having a thought. So the idea, even saying it out loud, is more terrifying. For me, that was one of the biggest hurdles and another reason why I chose self-care coaching and supporting fellow caregivers. When I came out of the hole and realized I needed to do something to change, I choose happiness despite my circumstances and I realized that so many other caregivers needed support in that area, and not from judgment. It is hard and it is tough and it can be all-consuming. And so those would be my two biggies.Speaking About Self-Care, What Are Some Of The Ways Caregivers Can Make Sure They Are Taking Care Of Themselves?NICOLE DAUZ: I always speak of three self-care tips and I say that you can put them in your back pocket and they get to travel with you wherever you go. And that's my fundamental in removing barriers to say so many self-care tips are accessible to us at all times. So if you are caring for an aging parent or a child and you can't leave the room, you can do these sitting by someone's bedside. If you need to, you could lock yourself in the bathroom for some peace and quiet. The first one is deep breaths using a technique called box breathing. So you breathe in for 4 seconds and then you hold your breath for 4 seconds and then you breathe out for 4 seconds and pause for 4 seconds. And the flexibility in that is you can do it for as long as you need to. I recommend at least 5 minutes. And then if you get really good at it, you can increase it to 5 seconds or 6 seconds or 7 seconds. And what that really does is instantaneously calms your breathing, it lowers your heart rate, reduces your blood pressure, and just actually tells your body that you're safe. The next is hugging. So if you're caring for a loved one, you have another human being within reach. And I love that more research is coming out about the impacts of hugging. We are human beings and we are built for connection. One thing that I've done with my daughter, especially when she was younger and a little a little smaller, is I would combine the hugging and the breathing together. So when she was fussing I would grab her, take her in my arms and hold her tight. She would fuss a little and then I would just start my deep breathing. I'd be very audible with it so she could hear it. And then after about 60 seconds, I could literally feel her body relax in my hug. And then we would do deep breaths together. That was one of my tools for really transitioning from her when she was in an out-of-control state to a behaviour that was more calming for both of us because we both needed that reset. Then the third one is a mantra. And my go-to is "it's not her fault." I'm a logical person and I'm just like, "that is not her fault. It's not her fault. Her brain is built differently, it's not her fault." And then "I love you." So, sometimes when I am hugging her or I just need to restrain her, I will just say to myself "I love you. I love you" because that also changes my energy and helps me calm down a little instead of spiralling with her. Those are my three go-to self-care that you can do while travelling with your loved one or even going to an appointment or sitting in the car in a parking lot. These are accessible to us all.How Can Caregivers Overcome The Guilt They Often Feel For Taking Some Time For Themselves?NICOLE DAUZ: This is the question I get the most and it is around a caregiver recognizing that they are first a person and being a caregiver is a role. And so I like to say "I've been a mom for 16 years, a caregiver for 13, but I've been Nicole for 49." And so I work to honour Nicole. And when I support other caregivers, I reflect that back to them. I even call it the Cape of Caregiving that can feel so heavy and all-consuming but that's when we kind of dig deep and realize that in order to be the best caregiver that we really all want to be, we need to take that time. For some people who feel so much guilt, it can be as simple as 5 minutes a day and doing these things where they're not even physically removing themselves from the same space, so it's those small wins. To me, self-care is anything that brings you joy. And when people feel joy, they feel better. And it's not about feeling better 24/7, but it just helps offset the challenging days of being a caregiver. And so that's how I focus it. And then it's those little questions, a few little questions to a caregiver allowing them to think again, dare to dream again about how it could be, and slowly letting them know that they are the only person who can make a change in their life.About Nicole DauzNicole Dauz is based in Ottawa, Ontario. She has been a caregiver for 13 years and a mom for 16. She has been on a journey of becoming a self-care advocate and learning to take care of herself for about seven."What happened is, when my daughter was at a 12-month checkup, we realized that she was severely delayed and so our life really changed at that moment because the chief neurologist said she would need early intervention. So we started weekly physical therapy so she could learn to walk at two and a half and then weekly occupational therapy so she could learn how to hold a spoon, put on socks etc. At four years old, the speech therapist said at that time there wasn't much use to continue but that they would. We circled back about six years later and she's just started speaking over the last couple of years using sentences. So certainly lots of progress. However, five years in, Summer would have been five, and I also had a very energetic seven-and-a-half-year-old little boy, while working full time; I was ignoring the signals my body was sending me. And as we all know, our body is constantly talking to us. And so many of us believe that we know better. It's usually just our ego. You know, I'm strong, I can do this. I can pull through. And so it was actually a trip on an ambulance that was my wake-up call. I was in the office working and I had a full-on attack, I'm assuming, a panic anxiety attack, which I had never had up until that point. But it hurt to breathe. And so that was the wake-up call. I had to knock on my desk to get someone's attention and they knew very quickly that something was wrong because there was a pain in my face. As I said, it hurt and I could not take deep breaths. They were also shallow breaths. So I was taken away in an ambulance through the front lobby of my building at lunchtime, which is so funny because I was so worried thinking that it was so embarrassing that someone would see me, like not realizing the severity of what was actually taking place. And I waited 90 minutes in the E.R. for a doctor to see me. And of course, by that time, my breathing had resumed and I felt fine. He checked me over and said I was fine, perfectly healthy, and released me. That's when I thought that even though I may, from a checkup perspective, be considered healthy, I realized there are no doctors who specialize in caring for caregivers or realizing the impact that stress can have on us. And so that really started my journey."Last but not least, Nicole wants to remind all caregivers, paid, unpaid, and anyone who's taking care of a loved one that "you get to choose happiness despite your circumstances and you are worth it."To listen to the full interview with Nicole, go ahead and visit our podcast or YouTube channel.Thank you for reading!Source: https://www.caringsupport.com/blog/what-no-one-tells-you-about-being-a-caregiver

Back To School Safety TipsLast, but not least, we have some back to school safety tips for your kids that will complement very well the products we recommend you add to your back to school shopping list for a safe school year. Our goal is to help you make sure your little ones remain safe and healthy to make the most of their time in school, even though the pandemic is not over yet. Here are our tips:Handwashing - Encourage your kids (and ask their teachers to mention this in the classroom too) to wash their hands frequently with antibacterial soap or a sanitizing cleansing wash and water for at least 20 seconds. If this is not possible, then remind them they can always use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Just make sure that it contains at least 60% alcohol (and that they can carry it in one of our handy sanitizer wrist bands.)‍School etiquette - For many children, this school year will be the first time they interact with other children in a school setting due to the pandemic. Teach them that they should always cover their mouths and noses with an elbow or a tissue when coughing or sneezing, and that they should avoid touching their eyes, noses and mouths with dirty hands to limit the chances of getting sick.‍Cleaning and disinfecting - Make sure your children know that they should disinfect their school supplies often to kill germs that may have transferred to these items from surfaces in schools. This means disinfecting their backpacks, pencils and pens, and those items they often share with their peers, like sharpeners and scissors. Make it easy for them to disinfect their space and things by giving each of them a compact sprayer to take to school, like the previously mentioned Mini Nano Sanitizer Sprayer.‍Check your kids for flu-like symptoms - Even after all your precautions, you should know that your kids may still get sick, especially when flu season arrives with the colder winter months. To alleviate this, make sure to check your kids for cold and flu symptoms often, leave them at home when they feel sick, and test them for COVID-19 if necessary. Good luck!About our companyDisinfect & Fog is a disinfecting company based in London, Ontario, that offers commercial disinfection and fogging services across Southwestern Ontario.

Are you a car rental manager or a rental car user who's going on a road trip this end of summer? We have some rental car disinfecting tips for both of you!Rental Car Disinfecting Tips for Car Rental CompaniesIf you own a rental car company or work for one, there are several things you need to consider when disinfecting a vehicle for your next customer, especially considering that the pandemic is not over and enclosed spaces like cars are hot spots for viral transmission. How to Kill Coronavirus and Disinfect Your Vehicles Without Damaging Interior Surfaces? These are our best rental car disinfecting tips for car rental companiesFirst things first... Make sure to sanitize your hands before coming in contact with a soiled car and put on some personal protective equipment (PPE) including a fitted face mask and disposable gloves. This way you will be protected from potential virus exposure or other elements like dust or strong odours.Next, clean the car. This means removing all floor mats and vacuuming the interior of the vehicle with the right attachments to reach all crevices. This is an essential step before disinfecting.Prepare to disinfect. Make sure to choose the appropriate tools and disinfectants for the job. For instance, a dry fogger might be the best device in this case, as you shouldn't wet car upholstery too much to prevent the growth of mould. Also, organic and non-toxic disinfectants are recommended as these don't cause any breathing problems after their use.Time to disinfect! The trick here is to fog the entire vehicle using smooth motions and going back to the high-touch areas that require additional attention. Afterwards, the car should be kept open (windows and doors) following the recommended dwell time indicated on the disinfectant label.BONUS TIP - In case you were wondering, these are the high-touch surfaces you absolutely need to disinfect in a rental car: door handles, steering wheel, ignition area, levers (turn signal, light controls, and wipers), dashboard and touch screens, radio, AC/heat and all other buttons, gear shift, armrests, emergency brake handle and all other handles, seatbelts and buckles, cup holders, and key or remote fob.‍Rental Car Disinfecting Tips for UsersWe can probably all agree that renting a car to go on a road trip is a fun experience. However, there are other things to consider when renting a car, like health and safety, especially after the pandemic started. That's why, even if you are sure that your car rental company completed a thorough disinfection process before handing you the keys to a rental car, you should take additional precautions, just to be safe. These are our best rental car disinfecting tips for car rental customers:First off... disinfect all door handles before getting into the car. In the best-case scenario, you should have a compact fogger or sprayer with you to take care of that. If not, simply wipe all door handles with a trusted disinfection solution and a clean cloth.Let the car air out. The second step should be opening all doors and windows to let the car ventilate for a few minutes and avoid breathing stale air that may contain allergens or viruses.Disinfect all high-touch surfaces. Once you get into the car and before you drive away, make sure to disinfect all high-touch surfaces such as the steering wheel, all buttons, handles and levers, armrests, seat belts and buckles, and anything else you can think of.BONUS TIP! If you or any of the passengers in the car have flu-like symptoms, it is best to wear masks while on the road or drive with the windows down for air to flow freely. That way you will avoid viral infections from person to person and you will get to enjoy your road trip to the fullest.Best Products and Devices for Rental Car DisinfectingWhether you are a car rental company owner or a customer, at Disinfect & Fog you can find the devices and disinfectants you need to ensure that renting a car continues to be a safe experience for everyone.Disinfecto Electrostatic Sprayer. To get more recommended jobs that you might be interested in, make sure you fill out your profile to 100% and stay active on the platform!10. Start a career in health care on the right footIf you want to start a career in health care, but don't know how, a great way is to get your PSW certification and work in a retirement home or a long term care facility to gain experience. This is a great first step before moving on to other roles, such as nursing!11. Know if a position is a good fit for you before applyingWhen applying for jobs, make sure to read through the job description carefully and determine if the listed responsibilities are all tasks that you would feel comfortable doing on a daily basis. Evaluate the pros and cons and that will help you decide if the role is right for you!12. Know what skills you need to advance in your careerTo get a better idea of which skills, certifications, and training you need to advance in your career, it is always good to look at job postings for roles that you would like to have in the future and check the most common requirements listed by employers.13. Volunteer before graduating to increase chances of getting a job right after collegeYou don't have to wait until graduation to start looking for opportunities to practice what you've learned. You can start gaining experience even as a volunteer, which will help you get a job faster once you graduate. One great way to do this is by creating a Caregiver Profile on the Caring Support Platform, where you can find job postings for healthcare workers in different stages of their careers.14. Don't be afraid to negotiate your salaryBefore accepting a job as a healthcare worker, make sure you sit down with the employer to discuss your wages, overtime pay, vacation pay, and benefits. If you are not satisfied with their offer due to the cost of living in your area or your particular living expenses, express your concern to the hiring manager and give them the opportunity to come up with a solution before making a decision.15. Remember to fill out your Caring Support profileFilling out your caregiver profile doesn't have to be complicated. A good strategy is to organize all the information you need for it in a document, with specific employment dates and everything, check for typos, edit it to your liking, and then simply copy and paste it to your profile. That way, if you make any mistakes, you can always go back to your original document and get it right instead of starting all over again and wasting time.16. Find volunteering opportunities in healthcareThe Caring Support app is not only for healthcare workers, it is also for students looking for volunteering opportunities. Simply go ahead and create a Caregiver Profile and start searching for volunteering opportunities right away. You can also select the option "Not Actively Looking" to let employers know you are not yet done with your academic program and are not eligible for actual jobs at the moment.17. Use Caring Support's In-App Messaging feature correctlyOne of the most helpful features of the Caring Support platform is the in-app messaging, which allows you to talk to potential employers who are interested in you, set up interviews, and get feedback. To make the most of this feature and impress employers, make sure to be careful with your grammar and punctuation, keep it professional always, and don't forget to check the app often to ensure you don't miss any messages.18. Choosing the right career path in healthcareChoosing the right career path for you can be tricky, especially if you like many different areas of the healthcare field, such as caring for others, performing medical procedures, or conducting research. What you can do is learn about the common job responsibilities of professionals in the areas you like and try to picture yourself in their role over the years. If you think you'd feel absolutely comfortable with most of the responsibilities of one particular career path, such as nursing or caregiving, that might be the one for you.19. Remain motivated while looking for jobsLooking for jobs can be a stressful, lengthy and challenging process, and being successful at it depends a lot on your positive attitude. To remain motivated, ensure to stay focussed on your goals, connect with people who are already in the field to learn as much as you can from them, continue updating your credentials with new courses and training, and stay up to date with the latest job postings from employers you are interested in.20. Maintain a good work-life balanceMaintaining a healthy work-life balance in the healthcare field is essential for all healthcare workers, as you need to feel well emotionally, mentally, and physically to be able to care for others. To achieve this, make sure to use your time off to relax and rest, practice activities you like, such as sports, arts and crafts, cooking, or dancing, and spend quality time with your loved ones.21. Don't be afraid to follow up after an interviewAfter a job interview, it is common practice to send a short thank-you note to the interviewer to let them know that you appreciated the opportunity to chat with them. However, after not hearing back from them for days, many people fear following up, but they shouldn't. If a week or two have passed, (less than that could make you look desperate) it's perfectly okay to send a follow-up message to remind recruiters that you are still interested in the position. Try it!22. Save your searches and favourite job postingsThe Caring Support platform allows you to save your searches and favourite job postings to apply later. That way you can keep navigate our job board faster and keep track of positions you've already seen and truly interest you. You can also favourite jobs so you don't lose them while you get ready to complete your application. This saves you time and keeps you organized.23. Be social and remain informedIf you're new to your career and want to move up quickly or if you're simply doing research on a career you'd like to pursue, make sure to join social groups and forums online related to it. You should also follow social media accounts that share valuable content about it and read the news to remain informed. A good way is to Join Our Caring Support community. We have created social groups on Facebook, Reddit, and LinkedIn for all healthcare workers, caregivers, and volunteers working or looking for work in Ontario. Also, follow us on Instagram and check out our News Feed, where we share the latest news about healthcare and long-term care.24. Don't ignore this section, as employers are always looking for healthcare workers that can help them overcome language barriers with patients and nursing home residents.26.
Top Reasons Why You Should Invest in a Fogger or Sprayer

We get it. You're a busy business owner and you don't have time or money, to waste. That's why we want to help you make informed decisions about disinfecting your business by giving you all the facts right away, without twists or turns. So, without further ado, these are the top reasons why you should invest in a fogger or sprayer for your business today. How Does a Disinfectant Fogger Work?Top Reasons Why You Should Invest in a Fogger or SprayerWhen it comes to disinfecting, nothing works better than foggers or sprayers. Both types of devices work by forcing liquid disinfectants to move through a nozzle, which forms a fine mist of tiny droplets that are small enough to coat any object and disinfect any space. These are the main reasons why we believe you should invest in a fogger or sprayer for your business:1. Fogging or spraying saves you tons of time. The use of sprayers and foggers saves you a lot of cleaning and disinfecting time, as these devices are able to disinfect a whole room in just minutes and with minimal effort since you can let surfaces air dry, as opposed to the time that would take you to wipe down all surfaces in a room by hand with a cleaning rag. Sprayers and foggers can also keep you from having to disinfect too often as these methods generate tiny droplets of disinfectant that reach every nook and cranny in the space, providing longer-lasting results. An example of this is the use of electrostatic sprayers, which charge the mist they produce with electricity, helping its particles cover surfaces more evenly by wrapping around objects and clinging to them for absolute disinfection.2. Foggers and sprayers guarantee all surfaces and objects will get disinfected.Apart from being proven and effective methods of disinfecting spaces in a short period of time, fogging and spraying can help guarantee that your entire business will receive the disinfection it needs for staff and customers to remain safe and healthy, even during flu season or another wave of COVID-19. The reason why is that dispensing and applying disinfectant solutions with foggers and sprayers is the most effective way to get to those hard-to-reach spaces where germs frequently accumulate and that no one is able to reach using the traditional spray-and-wipe technique.3. You, stand a better chance against COVID-19 and other viruses.Fogging and spraying are two great ways to remove pathogens from surfaces and from the air, especially in enclosed spaces where bacteria and viruses tend to thrive. Both methods are particularly effective against airborne pathogens that spread through respiratory droplets, such as COVID-19, so you'll have a better chance to protect your employees and clientele if you invest in one of these devices.4. Foggers and sprayers are cost-effective.Foggers and sprayers are highly cost-effective, which makes them a great investment. The reason behind this is how little product they use thanks to the microscopic size of the droplets they generate, which are able to cover more spaces with less liquid. Plus, with foggers and sprayers, you don't have to go over the same surfaces over and over again, and then dry them. You simply spray once and move on. Also, these devices also save storage space, since you only need to keep one product in stock that will last for a long time.5. Foggers and sprayers help you maintain a healthier environment.Your staff and customers deserve to be in a clean and safe space where their health is not compromised, and investing in a fogger or sprayer can help you with that. First, the use of these devices improves the presence of odours generated by bacteria and germ build-up. And second, using them frequently and consistently will reduce the odds that someone will develop a respiratory issue in your workplace, other than seasonal allergies. So, by disinfecting your business with a fogger or sprayer and one of our recommended disinfectant solutions, you will be protecting your staff from asthma attacks and other complications. NanoAtomizerandHeavyDutyULVFogger? Recommended Devices in Case You Decide to Invest in a Fogger or SprayerIn case we haven't convinced you yet, let's talk a bit more about foggers and sprayers. You should know that these devices work wonderfully in enclosed spaces like elevators, vehicles, washrooms, kitchens, and any other space with high foot traffic and little ventilation (perfect scenario for contaminants to spread!) Also, keep in mind that the effectiveness of these machines depends on the disinfectant solution you choose, so ensure to go with a non-toxic and high-quality product, and follow the instructions on the label. Now, let's get to the recommendations:Disinfecto Electrostatic Sprayer - This electrostatic fogger is lightweight and easy to use. It provides excellent coverage thanks to its adjustable atomization feature that allows you to switch from a 60-um to a 120-um droplet diameter. This, combined with its flow rate of 4.2 oz per minute, its 500ml solution tank, and its electrostatic generator for improved uniformity of droplets and surface coverage; offers a cost-effective disinfection performance.Nano Atomizer - This device works by producing a dry fog that disinfects on contact, making it perfect for businesses like stores, restaurants, hair salons, barbers, dental offices, medical clinics, and many more. This kind of thermal fogger is able to kill 99.99% of all viruses and disinfect all surfaces, including fabrics and electronics, especially when paired with a hospital-grade disinfectant solution.Portable Fogger - This cordless electrostatic fogger comes with a rechargeable battery for convenient, on-the-go fogging. It works by charging liquids (i.e., cleaners, sanitizers, and disinfectants) as they pass through a sprayer nozzle.
Best Practices For Staffing And Training In Senior Care - A Conversation With Jennifer Lagemann

Recruiters in all industries, including healthcare, often struggle with worker retention and satisfaction. This leads to staffing issues, higher turnovers, and instability within organizations. But there are ways around it. And to learn more about overcoming these challenges, we recently interviewed Jennifer Lagemann, expert in brand and storytelling for attracting senior caregivers and founder of NextJenn Copy, who provided us with several best practices for staffing and training in senior care. This is what Jennifer told us:Regarding Best Practices For Staffing And Training In Senior Care, What Are Your Recommendations For Companies To Schedule An Orientation?JENNIFER LAGEMANN: Best practices I have when it comes to staffing is to match clients to caregivers based on personality and availability before evaluating technical skills. Oftentimes it's personality and soft skills that contribute to a reason why a client might not want somebody back or their demeanor. They're rude or something along those lines. Oftentimes it has nothing to do with our training so it's important to match based on the caregivers availability and their personality when scheduling them, because a lot of clients might be quiet and they prefer someone who is also quiet, or maybe they're loud and would benefit from someone who is also loud and matches their energy. But those synergies have to be in place first before you even talk about training. Because training for home care is really malleable. And let's say if somebody does need that type of training, you can train them on an ad hoc basis on that skill or that set of skills before signing them out to a client. But to get that personality and availability right is critical in order to contribute to retention and recruitment aspects. And the other part is to be in consistent communication with your caregivers. And other people as well. I call it the Triangle of Communication. How I've been taught to think about this is make sure that your clients, family members and caregivers are aware of the schedule. So, every time you fill a shift, that means three calls, at least. Sometimes there are siblings involved or other providers involved that need to be aware, so it may require more than three, but it's a minimum of three calls that need to be made unless they prefer a different mode of communication, which you should also note. What Should Be Included In A Healthcare Worker Orientation? What Procedures, Policies, Code Of Ethics, Etc.?JENNIFER LAGEMANN: The first thing I would make sure to go over is to go over your culture. I think that it's really hard to explain culture in an interview or a remote setting like via a call. So when you do have your people in orientation, really go over your culture and what do you do to enhance your caregivers experience outside of them working. Because caregiving, and home care especially, is a very solitary type of work. Your caregivers are working one to one with clients in their homes. So oftentimes they feel isolated alone and unsupported. So you need to explain how you're going to support your caregivers while they're working elsewhere, but also make sure that they feel like they're a part of a team and a community, even if they work independently because they still have a supervisor, they still have an office team, and maybe you have a peer mentorship program, and you need to make sure you talk about that in your orientation to make sure your caregivers know who is there to support them. And oftentimes they don't even know who their direct supervisor is. So, also make sure to tell them who their supervisor is and also explain and break down who to call about what. Who do they call about scheduling changes, time off, a client issue, a discipline issue or just in general; like listing out different scenarios and who they should contact when, how they should contact them. If it's an after hours situation, how to handle that type of call or explain when you're calling off, this can't be done via text, for example. Make sure you outline those types of communications because if you don't say it, you'll find out really quickly that you should have. Also make sure that your caregivers know what support systems are available to them, whether that's through email or they have a peer mentor. A lot of times your agencies are implementing peer mentorship programs, at least for the first 90 days of a new caregiver's experience, to make sure that they have a peer that they can talk to, someone that they can confide in, that they might not be comfortable talking to the office about, and that way they can relate concerns or someone to talk to training about. Like, I really want to get trained in dementia care, for example. They would have someone to talk to about that, who is a peer and someone who's been in their shoes. So it helps to develop that rapport and make sure they're comfortable for their first 90 days. And then they can kind of be left to their own devices with the offices additional support. But these are really great programs that I've seen with great success. So those are a couple of things that I would make sure to touch on in your orientation.Regarding Recruitment, What Are The Most Effective Channels To Attract Candidates?JENNIFER LAGEMANN: I'll start with where you shouldn't be. I know that Indeed is a terribly common recruitment channel and it's really good for volume but when it comes to retention, it's very difficult to retain applicants that come through. They have the highest turnover rates, according to the latest Home Care Post report. So I would definitely try and steer clear of Indeed if possible. I mean, I understand that it is really good for volumes. And there's also no silver bullet, though, when it comes to a best recruitment channel. The best bet you can make is to be where your caregivers are. Where do they live online? And study that. Do you notice that a lot of caregivers are on TikTok? Or have you seen them on Clubhouse? Be where they are. You don't need to be on every channel. I think that every everyone tries to be everywhere at once, and you don't need to do that. You don't need to be on every social media channel or outlet, but know where your caregivers are. Do they prefer texting? Make sure that you incorporate that into your recruitment mix when it comes to communication or add them into a recruitment drip after they apply. Make sure you utilize the channels that you already have and make it as personal as possible and make it feel like it's custom to them. So they're really talking to me individually. Or, what if you got a customized video from the owner of an agency saying "Hey, blah, blah, blah, I really appreciate getting your application and would love to talk to you. Can you schedule a 30 minute interview at this link? I would love to chat with you soon." Imagine how that applicant might feel if they got a video like that or a quick voice message like that. That would change their experience. Or maybe don't take ten days to get back to them. What is the average get back to you date when it comes to how many days after a caregiver replies that they get a response. So if you're taking your sweet time and getting back to applicants, you're going to have a very hard time recruiting, so make sure you're on top of getting applications and respond to them. Even over the weekend. You still want to be getting back to them within at least an hour of their time through your application.Once Companies Have Identified Potential Candidates, What Are The Best Interview Questions They Could Ask During The Interview Process?JENNIFER LAGEMANN: I think there's a lot of different questions out there that people are asking, but you really can't get a full understanding of how a caregiver is truly going to work with you until they start. But there are a few questions that I think you could ask that could give you kind of a gauge of how they would perform on the job. One of them being "if you had a personal conflict that interfered with your work, how would you handle that?" You'll hear, oh, I might have a babysitting issue. I have a parent or sibling in place that could take care of them while I'm gone. And just understanding how they organize their life, how they prioritize things, but also make sure that as an employer that you are backing your employees up. "Hey, I understand if you have a personal conflict that comes up, we don't want to impede on your personal life." That's an interview question for you as well. It's not just for the applicant. It's a choice for you to kind of turn it around and give applicants a sense of how you would take care of them, because it's a two way street. Interviews are not just one way streets. And I feel like a lot of people are just using these as ways to vet out caregivers, but it's also a way for them to vent out you as a potential employer. Are you going to support them if they needed a day off? A lot of places I've worked with in the past, you don't get any time off, including unpaid time off, until a year after or they don't offer paid holidays. So this is a really great opportunity for you to showcase what you truly offer in terms of culture and environment for your applicants. So, definitely make sure that you take the chance to answer that as well when you're on the employer side of things and also ask "when you're working with a client living with dementia, for example, and they start yelling at you, what would you do next? It's kind of like a clinical competency question and helping them to give you an answer that gives you an understanding of how they perform. And that could be various things that can also indicate a lack of training and even if they give you a poor answer or maybe not the right answer or the one that you're looking for, this is an opportunity for you to provide training and for you to provide correction, redirection, and showcase what you know. Because if you know the correct answer, maybe you've taken the training yourself or you're a dementia care expert and you can be an authoritative figure that helps mentor them into a better caregiver. And I think that's super valuable. Because caregivers want education and a lot of people aren't giving them the proper training and education that they're looking for. A lot of caregivers want to pursue higher education and don't have those opportunities and doors open for them simply because of the wages that they make. And that's an opportunity for you too as an employer to justify why a caregiver should work with you. And lastly, "what's a challenge you've run into at work and how did you overcome it?" Understanding how an employee approaches a challenge is super critical to how they'll respond to challenges with you. And also approach this as an employer as well. We encountered an employee that wasn't performing up to par, and we put them in a performance improvement plan and over three months we helped to develop them professionally, personally, and they were promoted at the end of it. Wouldn't that be a great success story share? You know, don't penalize people for getting things wrong; show them the right way, help them understand where they got it wrong, and then help them understand where they can go next, what their next steps are. So really think about interviews as a two way street that it's an opportunity for you to be on the chopping block as well or justify why you shouldn't be. And those are my couple of interview questions you should ask. What Are The Most Common Staffing Issues You Have Identified So Far And What Do You Recommend Companies Do To Solve Them?JENNIFER LAGEMANN: Sometimes I find that families are set up with a poor expectation of what they're actually getting themselves into. A lot of families may come from a private caregiving situation where they hired somebody directly and only work with them. So setting up as clear communication expectations like you will be speaking with the agency and we will send a caregiver to you. But outside of the caregiver being there, you will communicate with the office. And we will kind of handle all the administrative and other things, but also make sure they understand how many caregivers are going to be working with, or at least a range, because a lot of families will be like "I've cycled through three caregivers in the last three months and this is not what I wanted." It's a really tough recruitment market. Nowadays, we are experiencing a gigantic caregiver shortage, or at least that's what they're portraying it to be. And a lot of families are set up with an expectation that they only have one caregiver, or at least that's the expectation they have in their head. And so make sure you're being honest about what the situation actually looks like for a family because once they've only had one caregiver for, let's say, a couple months and that caregiver needs some time off or they're going to be switched on to another client for X, Y, or Z reasons, make sure that you set them up with that expectation too. If you just take a caregiver away from a family, you're going to need to explain why or at least to the degree that you can, because obviously you don't want to give away private information that's protected, but make sure that you're setting people up with honest expectations. Caregivers too. If they're expecting to work with one client for 40 hours a week, is that actually going to be the case or are they going to be working with three different clients for various hours? They don't have breaks in between, make sure you let them know that. Will you be working with five clients? Maybe not, or maybe you will, but make sure you're honest about those things and communicate with them when there's a schedule change because families generally don't have a problem with a schedule change, but if they don't know who's coming or somebody else comes that they weren't expecting that's when the issues start because they're like "Well, I wasn't expecting this person to be here. Who is this? Who's a stranger coming into my house?" That's their approach because they don't know who the person is. So what if you took the call and said "Hey, I have so-and-so coming over to your house, they are new to you, they are not new to us, and they've been with us for a while. Here are some of their experience and they really enjoy cooking." Perfect. A family would probably really appreciate a call like that to have some context or history as to where this person came from, or "they have a senior license or they have a bachelor's degree in so-and-so doing this in context I think that would be helpful." And also making sure that you respect a caregiver in their work life balance. Don't expect people to pick up every shift that you have available, so don't bombard them with so many text messages because that was one thing I hated as a scheduler, that I was supposed to send out a text for every shift that we had but I knew full well that not every caregiver was going to pick up the shifts that I sent out. So I was like "Why don't I just send out the shifts that I know a caregiver will want or should be available for and only send those to them so they're not seeing things that they know they aren't available for or I know that they're not available for". So just make sure that you're respectful of the caregivers time, their phone, their availability, and also not double booking. Make sure that they are prepared when it comes to training and really just overcommunicate is what I would suggest when it comes to staffing issues.About Jennifer LagemannJennifer is a wife, writer and former family caregiver based in Kansas City. She works as a senior living/senior care content writer and strategist, helping healthcare organizations like home care agencies, hospices, rehab facilities, and assisted or Independent living communities with their content marketing needs."I first started as a caregiver for my grandmother at home in Massachusetts, and it was a really wholesome and comprehensive experience. I was around 12. My grandmother had a stroke, and then she developed cancer. Eventually she was admitted into hospice care. And it was just a really eye opening experience. It really showed me how health care works. She didn't speak any English, only Vietnamese. So, I was bilingual growing up, and it was really a challenge making sure that she got the health care that she needed because she couldn't communicate directly with her providers. So that was something that I had in the back of my mind as I was growing up," says Jennifer. She adds that "I was wanting to be an advocate for other patients and to make sure that they get the care that they need because, let's say she was in senior living, for example, she wouldn't have thrived because nobody would have been able to talk with her. They wouldn't have created the food that she liked. And they wouldn't have had activities that she enjoyed doing. And those three things really made me think about the fact that all care isn't created equal and I wanted a way to create something that would help prevent this from happening to other people."Jennifer also says that when her grandmother passed away, she was able to see things differently. "I was a biology major and my grandmother passed away during my first semester of college, and it really made me rethink my trajectory in life and where I wanted to go. I wanted to be a geneticist, and I thought I had my whole life planned out ahead of me. So I switched to became an English major and really leaned on my writing skills and wanted to hone my craft. And eventually I found my way into health communication as a major in a degree program. And then I started working at home care agencies as a caregiver. Shortly after that, I started working in offices as a scheduler intake manager, training these after hours persons. So I got to dabble in a bunch of different roles that coincided with other departments. A lot of my work was networking, marketing, building relationships, I was taking intake calls, and I really got a holistic sense of how a home care business operates from the inside out. And I saw the same problems from Massachusetts to Nebraska to Kansas."Jennifer concludes explaining that "I've had the chance to work with a lot of other agencies through my consulting work and I wanted to create my own thing during the pandemic because I got my hours cut in half as a scheduler, and decided to get back to home care agencies and clients and caregivers by being a marketing operations consultant. So, I was able to utilize my writing skills to support my family and give back to our community. So I've been able to work with agencies in Manitoba and California, and all across the US, and able to get a holistic sense of how business works and helping them grow their operations, build their training programs, make suggestions, change their operations, and streamline things so they're easier for the owner. And I've been doing that ever since, and it's been a really great journey so far, and I've been trying to develop and grow my career as a writer. So it's been a really great time."To listen to the full interview with Jennifer, visit our podcast or our YouTube channel.Thank you for reading!Source: https://www.caringsupport.com/blog/best-practices-for-staffing-and-training-in-senior-care

Social Media 101 For Healthcare Workers - A Conversation With Cali Wiersma

In this day and age, there're probably very few people out there who aren't on social media... yet. Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and most recently TikTok, are part of our daily lives both personally and professionally, so learning how to use them to our advantage is a must, especially for healthcare workers looking for new work opportunities. With that in mind, we recently sat down with our very own Cali Wiersma, social media specialist at Caring Support, to take a crash course on all things social media. This is what she told us.Do's And Don'ts For Healthcare Workers On Social MediaAccording to Cali, "social media is an amazing tool that a lot of professionals across the globe are using to find their next dream job or great employee – the world is quite literally your oyster when it comes to the exposure and access to information and opportunities that you can find online. However, your use of social media will affect your job search and could even harm your ability to get that dream job if you’re not careful."These are some of her social do's and don'ts:Do see your social media like that cover page to your story. It's going to tell them what they need to know and whether or not you'd be a good fit for the team and it's just really important that what you're putting out there is something that you wouldn't mind people to see.Don't forget about privacy settings. It just takes going into your actual privacy settings and checking things out once in a while and just making sure that the version of yourself that you're putting out there on social media is the best version you can.Do be mindful of the fact that every time you comment on anything, post anything, like something, share something, you are putting information about yourself out into the social-verse.Don't ignore the public nature of social media. You need to think of social media as a big grocery store. If you wouldn’t stand on a platform at the entrance screaming what you just shared on social media to everyone that walks in the store, then you need to take a moment to consider your privacy settings on your social pages.Do take a moment to do a privacy check-up on ALL your pages when you are job searching, – yes, even the ones where you don’t use your real name. You’d be surprised how easy it is to find people even when they think they’re being stealthy. If there are posts you’d rather potential employers don’t see you have a couple of options – take them down OR change the privacy settings so that only your friends can see them.Don't let people tag you in photos without your approval. Turn on the tag review feature on your social profiles. This feature allows you to review things that people tag you in BEFORE they get posted to your profile or page. It gives you the chance to say “whoa! Hold on. I don’t want this out there.” And to ask that it be taken down or to un-tag yourself from it entirely. (But remember, if you simply un-tag yourself, that picture of you on the beach drinking wobbly pops with your bestie is still out there in the social-verse and can be found by using facial recognition software that is actually pretty easy for anyone to get their hands on.)Do learn more about the settings of your social media. Most social platforms, or at least the major ones that we all know and love like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn etc., you have the ability to chose who can see what you post by changing the privacy settings on your overall page or even just individual posts. You can even go so far as to chose who of your friends can see certain posts too by setting up custom privacy filters.‍Social Media Recommendations For New Grads"The best advice that I have is to promote yourself as if you are the best at what you do. You want to sell yourself and your abilities to potential employers. You are, in fact, marketing yourself. So, think of it more like you are a product that you're trying to sell. You're a service that you're trying to sell, right? Look at you, how you would want an employer to see you, and then just try to make that come across in your video resume, in your Caring Support profile, in your other social media channels, your paper resume or wherever you can. Once you do that, your education and skills are going to shine, and you're going to get that chance for the interview. It's just taking that first step," says Cali. Advantages and Disadvantages of Social Media Assisted Collaborative HealthcareWhat Healthcare Employers On Social Media Should KnowCali provided us with some recommendations for employers:It doesn’t matter if you are a small organization with only one employee or a larger organization with thousands of employees, your organization needs to be on social media and should have a website. You should claim your business on Google so you can manage the reviews and information that is there. You want to make sure that the information out there is what you want potential clients and employees to see. A website and social media presence can help you do that, and it can help your business attract your next amazing employee. It’s important to remember that even though you are an organization and you're the one looking for employees and holding the interviews, employees are also checking you out and should be interviewing you as well because their choice to work for you will ultimately come down to the information they can access, reviews, and how you promote your organization. You can control that information, but you need to be proactive in managing your organizations online presence.Be aware that nobody wants to go to work for a company that may be misrepresenting itself online or has no information out there. That's when your employee turnover will be very negatively affected. The best thing that you can do is to control the information and to be proactive in managing your organization's online presence.Best Social Media Platforms For Healthcare Workers To Network And Self-Promote"The best social media platform is LinkedIn. LinkedIn is very important for all working professionals. It doesn’t matter if you are a store greeter, a finance director, a healthcare worker, or an actor/actress, LinkedIn is such an amazing tool to make connections and network with like-minded individuals and organizations that you would like to work with. Even Ryan Reynolds has LinkedIn! Facebook and Instagram are just the standards that most people use, and even TikTok is a rising star when it comes to people promoting themselves as the amazingly hard-working individuals that they are," according to Cali.Other Channels To Self-PromoteWhen it comes to other channels for self-promotion online, Cali recommends Caring Support's video resume feature. "I LOVE the video resume feature on the Caring Support platform. Cover letters, in my opinion, are slowly becoming a thing of the past. Not a lot of employers read them because they don’t have time. Did you know that the average amount of time that an employer spends looking at your resume before deciding if you’re in the “contact” or “don’t contact” piles on their desk is only 7 seconds? This is why video resumes are an awesome way to ensure that potential employers are checking you out. People in general are more likely to watch a short video than read a document. This makes the video resume feature something that is super important to your job search and will set you out from the others that don’t have one."Cali also offers some tips to record a successful video resume: "It may sound cliché, but just be you. Before you film take a moment to psych yourself up. Listen to some empowering music, and self-care the heck out of yourself. Also, make sure you are feeling great going into filming. Write a script and practice in front of a mirror or with a friend and keep it short and sweet. 60 to 90 seconds with two minutes being the absolute longest."How To Attract Employers To YouAccording to Cali (and everybody else on this team!) joining Caring Support and creating your free account should be the first and most important step for anyone who wants to attract the attention of employers."From there it’s all about making sure that your profile is fully filled out. You want to strive to see your profile hit that 90% - 100% filled out range. When you successfully do that, you will get a cool flame by your name that will make your profile a top-tier profile. Having Top Tier profile status means there’s a good chance that a healthcare organization will reach out to you via the messaging tool because when they use the search filters on their end. That’s really the cool thing about the Caring Support platform. Healthcare workers don’t have to do all the work when it comes to the job search process," she adds.About Cali WiersmaCali is a digital marketing specialist and administrative professional with an eye for detail and a drive to take on any challenge presented with determination, passion, and creativity. She has experience working with various companies across multiple disciplines including finance, safety, cellular and the oil industry. This is what Cali said about her professional journey:"I didn't actually get my start in digital marketing or social media management. I actually went more the route of just administrative professional work. So like front desk receptionist, that kind of thing. And then about six years ago, I got pregnant with my first daughter and I had her. And for about five years, I've been a stay at home mom. And during the pandemic, I decided that I wanted to go back to work, but I didn't want to go back to doing what I was doing before. So I actually went back to school during the pandemic with two kids under the age of four. And I got my diploma as a digital marketing specialist from Trios College. And that is where I was introduced to the team here at Caring Support. I was lucky enough to do my internship with Caring Support. And then I guess they loved me so much, they decided to keep me on."To learn more about Cali, visit our "Meet our Team" page.
The Closer You Are, The Safer They Are

Living far away from a senior loved one can be stressful for both parties, especially if your loved one falls ill. More serious issues may arise, meaning the only option is to move closer to your loved one to care for them locally. This guide can help determine when it’s time to move closer to your loved one.Poor MaintenanceThe 20 minutes it took your loved one to cut the lawn a few years ago might take twice that now or may simply be impossible. More serious issues could include the inability to change a lightbulb. Poorly lit rooms heighten the risk of trips and falls.Poorly maintained ovens could be another problem. Bending down to clean them may no longer be an option. Continuously cooking with a dirty oven can create carbon-based fumes and excess smoke, a potential fire hazard.Signs Of InjuryFalls are the leading cause of injury-related deaths in adults 65 and older. If you start to notice any bruises on your loved ones, it could be a sign they've recently fallen.Burns are the second leading cause of home injuries. Your senior loved one is more likely to accidentally burn themselves if they suffer from poor eyesight or memory impairment. Your elderly relative might not have even felt the pain from their burn if they have a condition called peripheral neuropathy.Poor Personal HygieneThere are several reasons your loved ones could be neglecting their hygiene, and it's a sure sign they need you close by. They may have physical issues that make taking a shower difficult, or they may feel unsafe. If memory is an issue, they may forget to take care of themselves every day without even realizing it.Struggling With Phone ConversationsIf your phone conversations end up in a flurry of confusion and frustration, it's not a good sign. Poor hearing or comprehension on your loved one's behalf can make phone conversations a challenge. If they struggle to understand you, there's a chance they could misinterpret information from medical professionals such as doctors, and your loved one's confusion makes them a prime target for phone scammers. How You Can HelpOnce you move closer to your loved ones, you can keep a closer eye on them and carry out any maintenance and modifications around the house to make it safer. It may be that aging in place is no longer an option, and you may have to look at alternatives. Depending on your senior loved one's physical and mental state, a senior living community that offers independent, assisted, or memory care facilities may be a safer option.Moving closer to your senior loved one will likely involve taking out a mortgage, which is a real estate loan. There are several types of mortgages available, and those that you may qualify for will depend on your personal circumstances as well as your credit history. The terms of a mortgage can vary depending on these factors, so it’s wise to conduct research before applying for a mortgage.During the mortgage application process, lenders will calculate your debt-to-income ratio to determine what you can afford to pay each month. By adding up your existing monthly obligation and dividing it by your gross monthly income, you'll be able to determine how much you can pay.Sleep EasyNot only will having you closer provide reassurance to your loved one but you'll be able to sleep easier at night knowing that you're just a short drive away.Caring Support offers a more community-minded tool for healthcare recruitment available to schools, employers, and workers.
Survival Tips For Healthcare Students

Going back to school can be stressful. The thought of the unknown (ie. what to expect, how hard will this be, will I be able to do this, will I succeed, will I fail, etc.) can be overwhelming and downright scary for some healthcare students. That’s ok. You are not alone. There are some things that you can do to ensure that you survive your educational career and Caring Support is here to help with some healthcare student survival tips.1. Don’t Let Your Studies Take Over Your Life.It can be easy to throw yourself into your studies and toss everything else aside, but don't forget to take time for yourself. It's important to remember to take time to enjoy non-healthcare related activities like practicing self-care, going to a movie, going out with friends, checking in with family, playing sports, etc., so that your brain has a chance to rejuvenate and be ready for your next round of classes, exams, and studies sessions!2. Learn Keyboard Shortcuts To Make Your Studying Life Simpler. There is so much to learn as a healthcare student and as you go through your courses you will end up with tons of lectures and material to study so it will get increasingly harder to keep track of your notes. Keyboard shortcuts like CTRL + F will help you look something up quickly saving you precious study time.Apple Keyboard Shortcuts:Microsoft Keyboard Shortcuts:3. Learn How To Study.Other healthcare students will share how they learn, the notecards they make, and what works for them, but don’t feel that you need to do the same things because what works for them may not work for you. You will learn at a different pace and your study habits need to be your own. Be happy for them that they have found what works for them, take suggestions if you want to, but ultimately you need to find the methods that work best for you. Some study methods you should research are:SQ3R MethodRetrieval PracticeSpeed PracticePQ4R MethodFeynman TechniqueLeitner SystemColor Coded NotesSee this article from the University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences for more information on these study methods and more. There are many more methods out there, and the ones mentioned may not work for you. Find what works for you and stick with it. You got this!4. Don't Compare Yourself To Others. You will learn at a different pace than your peers. You will have strengths and weaknesses that are different than other healthcare students – that is ok! At the end of the day, you are all in school for the same reason: to achieve an education in your healthcare field so that you can be the best healthcare worker that you can when you are our in the work force.5. Seek Out Older Healthcare Students (Find A Mentor)If you have a mentor in your corner, you will have a wealth of knowledge at your fingertips. They will know where the best study spots are, advice on professors, best places to celebrate after a successful exam, study tips, and offer general support. If you are unsure where to find a mentor, you can always go to the student counsellor or student office at your school and ask to be introduced to one. You won’t regret it and sometimes they can become lifelong friends.6. Nurture Meaningful Friendships And Don’t Forget To Check In With Family.Take time to get to know your classmates. You won’t regret it and you may even find lifelong friends that will walk by your side through your educational career and right into life after college.Healthcare studies can be hard and time consuming and you may find that other friends and family will be missing your presence so make sure to check in with them once in awhile to update them on how you’re doing.7. It’s Ok To Not Be Ok And To Need To Ask For Help.If you are struggling with a topic that you are studying there are many avenues that you can reach out to for help: professors, TA’S, tutors, classmates, your mentor. Don’t wait to long to ask for help if there is something you are not understanding. The sooner you ask for help, the easier it will be for you to move on to the next topic. If you are struggling with your mental health while in school, there are also many options for seeking help for your mental health: student counsellor, your family doctor, your friends, your family, classmates, helplines, etc. Just remember; you are not alone. Taking on something as intense as healthcare studies can leave you feeling alone, overwhelmed, and stressed out. It’s ok to not be ok and it’s ok to reach out for help when you need it.8. Act The Part Of A Healthcare Worker. It’s never too early in your healthcare career to start focusing on how you act professionally. This could mean:Cleaning up your social media accounts: Checking your privacy settings and making sure that any public posts you have shared are something you would want a potential employer to see.Cleaning up your look: If you will be wearing scrubs, start looking for some now that fit properly, are comfortable etc.Be kind and courteous to others around you: Some of your best references will come from classmates and professors when you first start out on your job hunt.If you want to read more about how your social media presence could affect your job hunt, you can take a look at our article titled “How Does Social Media Affect Your Healthcare Career?”You’ve Graduated!

These days, people are more aware than ever before of how important mental health is for our overall wellbeing. With depression, anxiety, and other mental difficulties on the rise after long months of isolation and uncertainty during the pandemic, mental health will continue to be a priority for years to come, and no longer a topic to ignore or hide. This shift is the reason why mental health-related careers, such as mental health social worker jobs, are currently in high demand and have become a great choice for anyone interested in the healthcare sector and in making a real difference in people's lives. Read more about social worker jobsWhat Is Mental Health Social Work?Mental health social work, also known as psychiatric social work, is a specialty within social work dedicated to supporting people living with mental health issues that affect their ability to get and/or maintain employment, secure housing, and overcome other challenges. The support offered by specialists in this career is usually in the form of individual or group therapy, coaching, assistance for accessing social programs, counselling, and referrals to community services or jobs. This type of social work is also known for helping people manage substance abuse and addictions, as well as supporting them in regaining control of their lives and getting involved with their communities in a productive and positive way. Specialists in this field often work alongside psychiatrists and other behavioural experts to make sure clients get the medications they need and are not posing any danger to themselves or others.Mental health social work not only focuses on clients but also on their families since they sometimes need as much support as the person living with a mental illness. Fortunately, this practice makes it possible for families and even communities to have healthier relationships with their most vulnerable members, allowing these individuals to live productive lives and build a better future.History Of Mental Health Social WorkMental health social work began in the early twentieth century "as a result of a movement for community care of the mentally ill. Formerly preoccupied with institutional care of the mentally ill, psychiatrists now became interested in the control and prevention of mental illness in the community," according to an article published by the National Library of Medicine of the United States.Another article titled "The Changing Role of the Social Worker in the Mental Health System" and written by Uri Aviram, Ph.D., assures that "historical analysis of the social work profession shows that its involvement in the mental health field has started during the early stages of the development of the profession."About the history of mental health social work, the Global Institute of Social Work says that "In 1918, Smith College started the first training program for psychiatric social workers. While the program's first efforts were aimed specifically at soldiers and their families, psychiatric social work rapidly spread to other fields of practice. Psychiatric social work received another advance due to a general increase in mental health awareness generated by the activities of the National Committee On Mental Hygiene."What Does A Mental Health Social Worker Do?Mental health social workers, or psychiatric social workers, are professionals that provide support for people that suffer from mental health illnesses and substance abuse. Their job is to help clients tackle and cope with their issues whether they are behaviours or emotions that negatively affect their clients’ lives and by doing this, they play a critical role in improving overall wellbeing and mental health in our society. In terms of responsibilities, what mental health social workers do depends on where they work and how they provide treatment. For instance, social workers in private practices who offer individual assistance do different things than their peers in non-profit organizations or community services that offer group assistance. However, there are several tasks and responsibilities that all mental health social workers do:Offer mental health strategies and psychotherapy services to clientsProvide resources to help clients to cope with challengesHelp clients with issues caused by their mental health challenges (drug abuse, self-harm, insomnia, etc.)Coordinate support groups, such as those for addiction, eating disorders, and self-harmCollaborate with other healthcare professionalsSupport clients with coping with stress, sadness, or depressionHelp clients achieve their goals and improve their livesIn terms of skills needed to work as a mental health social worker, there are certain soft skills that are absolutely essential for these professionals, such as communication, the ability to build a rapport with clients, empathy, compassion, problem-solving, organization, stress management, cultural competence, crisis intervention, and interpersonal skills. How To Become A Mental Health Social WorkerTo become a mental health social worker, individuals need to earn a bachelor’s degree in social work or a related field (like psychology) from an accredited university and complete an internship or practicum. In some cases, candidates in this field also need to complete a master's in social work (MSW) program. This is an additional step that may take some time, but there are accelerated programs for individuals who already hold a bachelor’s degree in social work. The last step is completing the registration process with the regulatory body that oversees social work in the province or territory where each candidate lives. Part of that process involves understanding the Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice of their provincial or territorial regulatory body. After that, mental health social workers are ready to start looking for jobs.FAQs About Mental Health Social Worker JobsThese are the most frequently asked questions about mental health social worker jobs:1. What Are the Most Common Mental Health Work Issues? The most common issues faced by mental health social workers are stigma and lack of accessibility to their services. The stigma around mental health happens because many people feel ashamed or embarrassed about seeking help, and the lack of accessibility to mental health services occurs due to a number of factors like poverty, which affects people's capacity to find resources and attend appointments, lack of time to receive help because of work obligations, and other socioeconomic limitations.2. Which Are the Best Practices of Self-Care for Mental Health Workers?Mental health workers can benefit from activities like sleeping, resting, exercising, eating healthy meals, and taking time for themselves to practice a hobby or simply be in contact with nature. These self-care practices are known to help anyone who suffers from professional stress, especially mental health workers who sometimes get overwhelmed by their workload.3. What are the qualifications for mental health social worker jobs? The most common qualifications necessary to work as a mental health social worker are completing a college or university program in social work or other social science or health-related discipline, having some work experience in a social service setting (volunteer work can be enough), and being registered by a provincial social work regulatory body in most provinces.4. Is working in mental health without a degree possible?Yes, it is. Mental health is a broad and growing field within healthcare with certain roles that don't necessarily require people to hold a post-secondary education degree, just a certification or training. For instance, some people can work in healthcare settings as substance abuse counsellors, caseworkers, social services assistants and other roles related to mental health.5. Are there any Part-Time Mental Health Social Worker Jobs?Absolutely. Sign in to your Caring Support account (or create one, if you haven't already) to discover all the opportunities to work as a mental health social worker available for you across Ontario.6. What Are Mental Health Recovery Worker Jobs?Mental health recovery workers are social workers who help adults and young people with mental health problems or learning disabilities to improve their lives. They provide them with practical support, resources, and advice so they can become productive members of their communities.7. What is a Mental Health Rehabilitation Worker?Mental health rehabilitation workers are social workers who work under the guidance and supervision of other mental health professionals like psychologists or psychiatrists to provide mental health intervention to people who need it. These social workers are usually employed in long-term care settings and their work is focused on residents and clients, as well as their families.8. How to Become a Seniors' Mental Health Worker?Seniors’ mental health workers provide specialized mental health services to senior citizens (65 years of age and up). To become a specialist in this field, people usually need to complete an academic program that teaches them how to support and assist individuals with age-related mental health disorders, like dementia or psychosis. They also need to learn skills to help these individuals remain in their communities and to prevent psychiatric hospitalization, whenever possible.9. What Can Mental Health Social Workers Do for Essential and Frontline Workers?Mental health social workers help essential and frontline workers overcome some of the challenges they have been facing since the beginning of the pandemic, like exhaustion, stress, lack of resources to do their jobs, fear about their own health, grief, depression, burnout, and even lack of training to perform their changing roles.10. Are Mental Health Workers Needed in Prison?Absolutely. Mental health social workers who work in prisons and other correctional settings help inmates deal with mental health issues and support their mental well-being during their time behind bars. The most common mental health issues these social workers deal with are depressive disorders, bipolar disorders, personality disorders, and post-traumatic stress disorders.11. What is a Mental Health Hospital Social Worker?Social workers employed in psychiatric hospitals or general hospitals usually provide therapy, counselling, and treatment to patients. In most cases, they are members of interdisciplinary teams that include nurse practitioners, psychiatrists, and other physicians, and that collaborate on care plans for people dealing with mental health disorders.12. Are Mental Health Workers Needed in Schools?Yes. Some schools employ mental health professionals to support early identification and early intervention services for students who need them. They also coordinate and lead mental health awareness and stigma-reduction initiatives to help students understand the importance of mental health and learn to identify when they or someone they know needs to seek help.13. When Can I Find Youth Mental Health Worker Jobs? You can sign in to your Caring Support account (or create one, if you haven't already) to browse all the opportunities to work as a Youth Mental Health Social Worker available for you across Ontario.14. What Is a Mental Health Disability Support Worker?Mental health disability support workers are healthcare workers who provide support to people with mental health-related disabilities, meaning those that limit them to perform their daily activities. Most of the disabilities in this category are related to emotional and psychological issues, such as anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, substance abuse, anorexia, etc.15. What's the Relation Between Addiction and Mental Health Workers?Mental health social workers can also help people struggling with addiction issues since the two are very much related. Social workers in this dual field support people in developing new coping skills to improve their quality of life. They also assess related problems, develop action plans, and provide crisis intervention as necessary.Accredited Mental Health Social Worker JobsRegistered mental health social workers can find employment in numerous work settings, such as private practices, local government, hospitals, mental health clinics, community health organizations, primary care facilities, rehabilitation treatment centres, individual and family services centres, and other places. Most of them work in offices where they assist clients in person or virtually, but others may have to visit clients at their homes or at long-term care facilities. To find mental health and clinical social work jobs or mental health and substance abuse social workers jobs, professionals in this field can rely on job boards online such as our very own Caring Support platform, where they will find numerous work opportunities across Ontario and soon in the rest of Canada and North America. In fact, after the pandemic started, many mental health workers were able to take their practices fully virtual, which has benefited them and their patients in terms of flexible work hours and availability to treat patients from anywhere in the country.Of course, the relationship between mental health workers and remote work is not perfect. There are some cons to consider, such as specialists not being able to get all the visual cues they were able to perceive from patients in an in-person setting. There's also the fact that some patients find it hard to find a private and quiet space to attend virtual appointments due to having kids, roommates around at all times or environmental noise sources, such as loud music coming from outside, construction work, and other factors.Nevertheless, mental health workers, like mental health social workers, have found remote work to be the best solution to balance their professional and personal lives and still give back to the community through their valuable work.Mental Health Social Worker Jobs Salary In OntarioLast, but not least, let's talk about salaries.According to multiple sources, the national average salary for mental health social workers in Canada is CAD$50,951 per year. However, other sources assure that the right number is anywhere between CAD$70,629 per year, for entry-level positions, and CAD$88,062 per year for more experienced workers, especially in Ontario and BC, where social workers, in general, are paid the most. What do you think of mental health social worker jobs now that you know all about them?
Commercial Cleaning Tips and Tricks Every Business Owner Should Know

Cleaning a business is not like cleaning a house. Some people might think otherwise, but you can trust us on this one. Commercial cleaning requires certain steps and techniques that go beyond the conventional cleaning of a house due to a number of factors such as size, foot traffic, higher volumes of waste, and others. So, to give you an idea of how to look after your business facilities, especially during this new wave of COVID-19, here are our best commercial cleaning tips and tricks that every business owner should know:Best Commercial Cleaning Tips and TricksLeave it to the professionals‍Commercial cleaning requires a better understanding of what products and devices need to be used on the surfaces and spaces in your building facilities. It is not as simple as spraying and wiping, as most people do at home. Therefore, professional cleaning and disinfecting companies are your best bet when it comes to cleaning and disinfecting commercial settings.Choose the right products‍Once you have the right team for the job, you need to make sure they are using the right products for your commercial facilities. For instance, if your business is a restaurant or a bar, you want your cleaners to use non-toxic, all-natural disinfectants that are effective on food-preparation surfaces and won't affect the health of your staff and customers. Check out our Disinfectants page to get an idea of what we're talking about.Disinfect, disinfect, disinfect‍As you probably know by now, commercial cleaning is not just getting rid of visible dust and dirt from surfaces; it is a more thorough process that involves eliminating contaminants through proper disinfection of surfaces. Our recommendation is to have your designated team or company start by cleaning surfaces with soap or any other detergent agent, and then continue with the application of disinfectants (sprayed or fogged) for absolutely germ-free surfaces.Clean all electronics‍Screens, keyboards, kitchen appliances, office equipment and other electronics need to be properly cleaned, especially if your business operates from an office setting and you know some of your employees have lunch or snacks at their desks (which promotes the spread of contaminants.) For these moisture-sensitive surfaces, the best alternative is disinfecting them with dry foggers, as these devices create a disinfecting fog that coats objects and leaves them 99.99% germ-free, when paired with the right disinfectants, of course.Don't forget to vacuum‍If your business facilities are heavily carpeted, you need to instruct your janitor or cleaning team to vacuum regularly before disinfecting. Doing this will keep allergens at bay, make spaces more fresh and clean for your employees and customers to be comfortable in, and keep people from developing respiratory complications over time.Take out the trash regularly‍Nothing generates more contaminants than garbage. Taking the trash out regularly will decrease the possibility of bacteria and viruses spreading all around while controlling the presence of odours as well. Another tip is to keep trash bags in the bottom of bins so you're cleaning team has an easier time replacing them.Take extra care to clean regularly touched objects‍In addition to disinfecting and sanitizing surfaces like desks and bathroom countertops, make sure to those high-touch surfaces and objects your employees have contact with the most throughout the day, like doorknobs, light switches, refrigerator doors, microwave doors, phones, desks and chairs, etc.Require staff to wash their hands thoroughly – and often‍Hand washing is essential to maintain an acceptable level of cleanliness and health in your commercial setting, especially when new variants of COVID-19 are identified and cases are on the rise like it is happening right now in Ontario and other parts of the country. Encourage your employees to contribute to your commercial cleaning efforts by washing their hands as often as possible, or at least sanitizing them before handling paperwork, servicing customers or returning to their desks after eating. You can also help them do it by installing a sanitization station in a strategic spot of your business facilities where most employees will see it.Read More: Commercial Disinfecting: Discover These 10 Effective Products! This vs ThatTo help you better understand the concept of commercial cleaning, let's compare answer these questions that compare it to other types of cleaning:What is the difference between commercial cleaning and industrial cleaning? While commercial cleaning refers to the deep cleaning of commercial settings like grocery stores, retailers, offices, banks, spas, hair salons, restaurants and bars, etc., industrial cleaning usually happens on a larger scale and requires more powerful equipment. This is because industrial settings like manufacturing plants, factories and warehouses, have larger surfaces to clean like high ceilings, massive windows, and heavy machinery that needs to be cleaned and disinfected often. Industrial cleaning is also a job better left to professionals, but if you want to get an idea of the type of devices needed to treat these spaces, Foggers and Sprayers page and scroll down until you see our "Industrial Devices" selection.Difference between commercial and domestic cleaningAs previously stated, domestic cleaning refers to the cleaning process of residential environments, which is always simpler than commercial cleaning, which is done on commercial premises. This is because houses are often smaller than businesses and have much less foot traffic, which means fewer people spreading germs. Imagine the effort that it would take to clean and disinfect a three-bedroom home as opposed to an average-sized office, retail store or restaurant. Even if a house happens to be larger than a business (a mansion or even a residential building, for instance), commercial settings still have more contaminated surfaces to disinfect and more complex cleaning needs than a home. The Impact that a COVID-19 Outbreak Has on a BusinessDifference between commercial cleaning and janitorial servicesOftentimes, people use “janitorial cleaning” and “commercial cleaning” interchangeably, as if they referred to the same concept. However, they do not. Janitorial services are usually those smaller cleaning jobs you need to be done around your business, but commercial cleaning involves deeper cleaning tasks intended to preserve the health and safety of commercial space, including disinfection and sanitization of surfaces and objects. Furthermore, it can be said that commercial cleaning contemplates janitorial services as part of it, but not the other way around if that makes sense.Commercial Cleaning BenefitsCommercial cleaning comes with many benefits for businesses, such as fewer employees calling in sick, increased productivity, and better customer reviews regarding the state of your facilities. People will always feel better in a germ-free space, and that's a fact. These are some of the reasons why commercial cleaning is and always will be an investment, especially after the pandemic started, back in 2020, and had an undeniable effect on the way businesses operate.Do you want to continue receiving the benefits that come with commercial cleaning after the pandemic is over? Our recommendation is to keep taking those extra precautions you adopted during the first months of the pandemic to make sure your staff and customers are safe and healthy. This will guarantee that, no matter what wave of COVID-19 is happening or what new variant is discovered, your business will remain open and germ-free, and your revenue won't be compromised as much. The only consideration you need to make is to hire the right team for the type of facility you have. For instance, if your business is conducted in an office, then you need commercial office cleaning services, which means that whatever company you hire for the job needs to have experience in cleaning moisture-sensitive objects and surfaces, like copy machines, keyboards, files, documents, etc. They should also know that desks need to be cleaned with appropriate disinfectants to disinfect those surfaces, considering how employees usually cough, sneeze, eat, and touch their desks with soiled hands, effectively spreading germs and bacteria on these surfaces. The same happens if your business is a clothing store. The company you hire needs to be aware of the fact that, besides washrooms, fitting rooms are the most contaminated spaces in your facilities since customers undress in there and often walk barefoot while trying on clothes, which inevitably spreads germs and contaminants on all surfaces of those enclosed spaces.Commercial Cleaning Prices in CanadaNow, let's talk about pricing. Cleaning and disinfecting companies usually charge by the hour and take into consideration the space they are hired to work on. This means that house jobs are going to be more affordable than commercial jobs. Nevertheless, commercial cleaning is an investment and the money designated for it should be determined by your company's budget and needs. The good news is that. if you are in Southwestern Ontario and looking for a reputable disinfecting company specializing in commercial services, you can rely on us at Disinfect & Fog.
