What is the difference between Sex and Gender

The movie: She's the Man
The movie: She's the Man

I think you have come across this question till now at least once:
"What is the difference between sex and gender?"

It's hard to define words based on different contexts; therefore, I recommend that you watch a movie called She's the Man.

Societies throughout centuries of civilizational progress have come up with roughly the same definition for sex and gender. But in the 21st century, for the first time, feminist writers tried to isolate sex (biology) from gender (social roles), distinguishing them based on biology and social roles.

In this movie, Viola, as a female football player, does not think of her sex as a limitation. She tries to convince others by adopting a convincing masculine role. Likewise, when her coach dismisses her by saying, "Girls can't beat boys," as if it were a "scientific fact," she rebels against it—obviously because she does not believe in biological sex as a determinant of ability.

I also need to point out that the movie doesn't make sense in terms of attraction. How is it possible not to recognize someone's face when you're attracted to them, especially someone from the opposite sex?

That said, the movie assumes that the strict roles and expectations associated with being a man or a woman are largely social constructs that can be adopted, challenged, and ultimately transcended. It poses this question beautifully: "Why are certain traits and abilities arbitrarily assigned to one gender or the other?"
