هر چیز که ظاهر می‌شود باید در چیزی یا بر روی چیزی ظاهر شود. امکان ندارد که فیلمی بدون صفحه‌نمایش وجود داشته باشد. امکان ندارد که کلماتِ یک رمان بدون یک صفحه‌ی سفید وجود داشته باشند. مکان ندارد که ابری بدون آسمان وجود داشته باشد. امکان ندارد که افکار بدونِ...
بدونِ چی؟
علاوه بر این اگر ما مشغول دیدن یک فیلم باشیم درواقع داریم صفحه‌نمایش را تجربه می‌کنیم. اگر مشغول خواندن یک رمان باشیم درواقع داریم صفحه را تجربه می‌کنیم. اگر ابرها را می‌بینیم، آسمان را تجربه می‌کنیم؛ بنابراین اگر افکارمان را تجربه می‌کنیم (که همه آن‌ها را تجربه کرده‌ایم) باید آن چیزی که آن‌ها بر روی آن ظاهر می‌شوند را تجربه کنیم.
آن چیست؟
و همان‌طور که صفحه‌نمایش از فیلم ساخته نشده، صفحه سفید از کلمات رمان ساخته نشده و آسمان از ابرها ساخته نشده پس هر چیزی که فکرها بر روی آن ظاهر می‌شوند نیز از جنس افکار ساخته نشده است.
همان‌طور که صفحه‌نمایش از کیفیت‌های محدودِ فیلم رها است، همان‌طور که صفحه‌ی سفید از کیفیت‌های محدودِ داستانِ رمان رها است و همان‌طور که آسمان از کیفیت‌های محدودِ ابرهایی که بر روی آن ظاهر می‌شوند رها است به همین ترتیب هر چیزی که افکار بر روی آن ظاهر می‌شوند نیز رها از محدودیت افکار است و بنابراین نامحدود است.
علاوه بر این تنها ماده اصلی موجود در فیلمِ محدود، صفحه‌نمایش نامحدود است. تنها ماده اصلی موجود در کلماتِ محدود، صفحه‌ی نامحدود است و تنها ماده اصلی موجود در ابرهای محدود، آسمانِ نامحدود است.
همین‌طور گفته می‌شود که صفحه‌نمایش، اصالت فیلم است، کاغذ، حقیقت و اصالت کلمات است و آسمان، حقیقت ابرها. فیلم، کلمات و ابرها، ظهوری موقت از حقیقتِ همیشه حاضرشان هستند.
به همین ترتیب تنها ماده اصلی موجود در افکارِ محدود، آن چیز نامحدودی است که افکار در آن ظاهر می‌شوند. این چیزِ نامحدود که افکارِ محدود بر روی آن ظاهر می‌شوند، حقیقت و اصالت آن است.
در رابطه با افکار، به این چیزِ نامحدود، آگاهی میگویند. آن حاضر و آگاه است.
یک فکرِ محدود، یک ظهور موقت از آن آگاهی نامحدود است. به‌عبارت‌دیگر، فکر از فکر ساخته نمی‌شود، فکر از آگاهی ساخته می‌شود.
یخ از یخ ساخته نمی‌شود بلکه از آب ساخته می‌شود. یخ اسم و فرمی موقت از آب همیشه حاضر است. آب اصالت یخ است. زمانی که یخ از یخ بودنش متوقف می‌شود تمام چیزی که از دست می‌دهد اسم و فرم موقتی‌اش است اما حقیقت و اصالت یخ یعنی آب از بین نمی‌رود. آن حاضر و موجود باقی می‌ماند تا اسم و فرم بعدی را به خود بگیرد.
بنابراین زمانی که یک فکر محو می‌شود ماهیتش یعنی آگاهی از بین نمی‌رود بلکه فقط یک اسم و فرم موقت را از دست می‌دهد و در دسترس باقی می‌ماند، آماده است تا اسم و فرم ظاهر بعدی‌اش را بگیرد.

Whatever appears must appear IN something or ON something. It is not possible to have a movie without a screen. It’s not possible to have the words of a novel without a white page. It’s not possible to have a cloud without a sky. It’s not possible to have a thought without …

Moreover, if we are seeing the movie, we are by definition experiencing the screen. If we are reading a novel, we are by definition experiencing the page. If we are seeing the clouds, we are experiencing the sky. Therefore, if we are experiencing our thoughts (and each of us is experiencing our thoughts) we must, by definition, be experiencing whatever it is they appear In.
What is that? [Silence]
And just as the screen is not made out of the movie, the white paper is not made out the words of the novel, the sky is not made out of clouds, so whatever it is in which our thoughts appear is not itself made of thoughts.
Just as a screen is free of the limited qualities of the movie, just as the white page is free of the limited qualities of the story in the novel, just as the sky is free of the limited qualities of the clouds that appear in it, so whatever it is in which our thoughts appear ... is itself free of the limitations of thought …, and is, as such, unlimited.
Furthermore, the only substance present in the limited movie is the unlimited screen, the only substance present in the limited words is the unlimited paper, the only substance present in the limited clouds is the unlimited sky.
As such, the screen is said to be the Reality of the movie, the paper the Reality of the words, the sky the Reality of the clouds; that which is Real in them. The movie, the words, the clouds, are a temporary appearance of their ever-present Reality.
Likewise, the only substance present in limited thought is this unlimited something in which it appears. This unlimited something in which the limited thought appears is its Reality.
In relation to thought, this unlimited something is called Consciousness. It is Present and Knowing.
A limited thought is a temporary appearance of this unlimited Consciousness. In other words, thought is not made of thought; it is made of Consciousness.
Ice is not made out of ice, it is made out of water. The ice is a temporary name and form of the ever-present water. The water is its Reality. When ice ceases to be ice, all that is lost is a temporary name and form, but the Realty of the ice, the water, is not lost. It remains present and available, ready to assume the next name and form.
So, when a thought disappears, its Reality (Consciousness) doesn’t disappear. It simply loses a temporary name and form and remains available, ready to assume the name and form of the next appearance.
