ترجمه «مردم»: Persons یا People؟

واژه Person (به صورت مفرد): برای اشاره به هر انسان، به صورت منفرد، به کار می رود:

• او کسی است که من احترام زیادی برایش قائلم.

She is a person I have a lot of respect for.

واژه Persons (به صورت جمع): خیلی رسمی است و فقط باید در متون یا مفاهیم حقوقی استفاده شود:

• دو نفر تحت تعقیب قرار دارند.

Two persons are being prosecuted.

• اشخاصی که به سبب ازدواج با یکدیگر مرتبطند

واژه People: برای اشاره به گروهی از انسان ها یا مردم استفاده می شود:

• سه نفر را که آن گوشه ایستاده بودند دیدم.

Correct: I saw three people standing on the corner.

Wrong: I saw three persons standing on the corner.

• علی و مینا اشخاص خوبی هستند

Correct: Ali and Mina are nice people.

Wrong: Ali and Mina are nice persons.

• لطفا، یه میز برای دو نفر

Correct: A table for two people, please

Wrong: A table for two persons, please

• برای این شغل با سه نفر مصاحبه شد، اما فقط یک نفر پذیرفته شد.

Three people were interviewed for the job, but only one person was accepted.

واژه peoples (به صورت جمع) = ملت ها، قوم ها

• نمایندگان ملل مختلف

The representatives of various peoples

اصطلاح in person = شخصا

• شاعر مشهوری که شخصا حضور می‌یابد.
